Crush's Coaster

Board your “turtle” and follow the strong East-Australian current for an incredible fast spinning coaster ride deep down the colourful ocean.

Your journey to the East-Australian current can start well outside of the building, even well outside of the regular queue area as the “big blue” is a popular destination and riding on the back of a turtle a special event that many guests want to experience. Once you get to to real entrance of the queue a nice warning miniature moving turtle welcomes you. It shows what to expect once you are on the attraction itself. But first things first. The big building with the over-sized painting, the blue rocks and a short piece of track where the vehicles shortly appear are a very inviting sight. It can't be overlooked and is a real magnet overfilling the queues all day long. Past the first entrance guests will queue a small switchback area with little themeing before entering the actual building. Here videos show more warning about the thrill of the ride before you bend to the right going up some stairs crossing over the actual ride track.

The see shore theme is well present inside the building. Many scenes related from the actual movie. Especially the ride control beach building at the Sydney Harbor with the well know “Mine, Mine, Mine” seagulls are fun. The boarding area is already visual from below the stairs but will go out of sight once you climb over the track area. Going down the other side a small wait later and guests will be ready to board their turtle shell ride vehicle. Up to 4 guests at the time can climb aboard seating back to back in two-seated rows.

Your first part of the ride starts of slow and relaxing, visiting the Great Barrier Reef accompanied by Nemo and Crush's kid, Squirt. Guest will go deeper into the dark ocean where more sea creatures are lurking. There are glow fish and jellyfish all around the guests, all playing their part in this dark ride section of the attraction. While most of this is indeed a dark ride, it does include the short drop outside the building that can be seen before entering the attraction.

Once guests enter the scene with the bombs and the sunken submarines they will know the mood of the ride is about to change drastically. The lift hill is in sight, at least for those sitting in the seats that go forwards, and guest better be ready for the strong current that awaits them. Once the shark Bruce pops up next to the turtle shells the acceleration sets in, pulling the vehicles right up the rest of the lift hill before being released at the top.

Once you are at the top your vehicle lock is released to, making it possible for the top of the shell to turn rapidly making use of the motion on the track and the added weight of the guests inside the shell. The vehicles will “spin” you through the rest of the roller coaster attraction, drop after drop with some great sharp turns, hops and other surprises in the dark deep sea and the East-Australian current. Light and sound effects help to make the experience even more special but one will never really know where they are heading to as the big open room remains fairly dark throughout the ride and the constant spinning will keep you disorientated.

The ride experience ends whit big cheers from Crush and his friends before exiting the vehicle back at Sydney's Harbour.

Tips

There is no FastPass option for the Crush's Coaster attraction so planning to visit the attraction is advised. With queues well over the hour for most of the day the only good moment to visit the attraction is at opening. It is advised to be at the Walt Disney Studios at least 20 minutes in advance, so longer queues during the rest of the day can be avoided. But even then queues can and will be already present.

Specials

Crush's Coaster is inspired by the 2003 Pixar movie Finding Nemo. A movie that won numeral awards including the Academy Award for Best Animated Film. The attraction's official opening date is June 9, 2007. It opened together with the "Cars Quattre Roues Rallye" attraction.

There is a fantastic hidden Mickey in the attraction. Just have a look in the mine room where three mines form a hidden Mickey. However, only 2 of the 4 guest will be able to spot it, depending if you are in the seats going forwards (you'll see them), or backwards (you will not see them).

The little miniature spinning Crush shell vehicle at the front of the entrance was added some time after initial opening date to give extra warning to guests who aren't aware of what to expect.

Crush's Coaster is the only roller coaster inspired by the Finding Nemo movie. However there is a vast collection of Finding Nemo attractions in other parks. The first one being 'Turtle Talk with Crush that opened in 2004 in Walt Disney World's Epcot. Other Turtle Talk clones opened in Disney California Adventure park in 2005, in Hong Kong Disneyland in 2008 and in Tokey DisneySea in 2009. The “Seas with Nemo & Friends” is another attraction that comes from the movie. This attraction opened in 2007 in Epcot and is themed as an underwater experience in the world of Nemo where guest climb aboard Clamobiles for the adventure under the sea. In 2007 “Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage opened in Disneyland Anaheim and the new “Finding Nemo – The Musical” show opened at Walt Disney World's Animal Kingdom park replacing the Tarzan Rocks show. In 2012 Finding Nemo becomes a big part of the theme used for the new Disney Art of Animation Resort in Walt Disney World.

The Crush's Coaster is the second spinning coaster in a Disney Theme Park. The first one can be found at Animal Kingdom and is known as Primeval Whirl. However, these are two coasters next to each other so some might say that Crush's Coaster is the third spinning coaster in a Disney Theme Park.

Crush's Coaster is the first roller coaster from the Maurer Söhne company from Germany making this the first project for them in cooperation with the Disney Imagineers. The base of the ride is a Maurer Söhne Xtended SC2000 Spinning Coaster but has been adapted to fit the Imagineers and Disney's needs.X
