Enjoying a pleasant walk through Thunder Mesa along the

guests leave the bustling streets of this wild west town behind them and enter
the shadows of the old trees in front of the
Country
Cookout Barbecue - from there it is only a few steps to the left to the
Cottonwood Creek Ranch with its duck pont and the
Critter Corral
- a wonderful area to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature. But there are more
reasons to take the walk down here or exit the railroad at the
Frontierland
Depot which is located at the Cottonwood Creek Ranch too.One of them is the Chaparral Theater a huge western style theater with a roofed stage and auditorium. What looks from the outside like nothing but an oversized barn the ranch owner cut out of local wood turns out to be a sophisticated modern theater ones guests have passed its huge gates that would be fitting even for a fort. The rustical, western style is continued in the interior seamlessly. So guests take place not on cushioned, soft seats but wood benchs without a back rest that are placed on steep stands offering a good view of the very wide and deep stage from each and every seat. And even so everything seems to be made out of wood and it looks as if the rancher ages ago bought some wild west drawings painted on animal skin to decorate the back wall, beneath those rustical themeing state of the art technology is hidden - a modern sound- and light system guarante a perfect show. But what really makes the theater that special is the stage. While equipped with an impressive technology it is not a normal theater stage as it makes use of the fact, that the theater is not really indoors but just has a roof above the stage (and the auditorium) - instead of an artifical landscape the back of the stage has a real hill with life trees and plants on it with some sculpted rocks to it's right. This natural, living set adds a sepcial touch to each and every production, especially as they are concived especially for this theater there for making the best possible use of the natural scene, which is carefully resculpted for each new show as far as necessary. A process during which sometimes the whole character is cleverly changed without upsetting the basic structure and plantations as not every show staged here necessarily has a connection to a wild west theme. Combined with the impressive size of the stage (wider, deeper and higher than usual - important among other for acrobatic elements incorporated in the shows) this allows for outstanding productions with a large cast and detail rich breathtaking sets. The productions here cross frontiers for theme park entertainment setting new standards - and are sure not to be missed! |

gelangen Gäste zum
Country
Cookout Barbecue, an dem sie die geschäftigen Strasse der Wild West Stadt
hinter sich lassen und in den ruhigen Schatten der alten Bäume eintreten. Von
hier sind es nur wenige Schritte nach links bis man zur Cottonwood Creek Ranch
mit ihrem Ententeich und dem
Critter Corral
gelangt - eine wunderbare Umgebung, um sich in mitten der Natur zu entspannen.
Doch es gibt noch andere gute Gründe, um den Weg zur Ranch zu finden oder hier
die Eisenbahn an der
Frontierland
Depot zu verlassen.Einer davon ist das Chaparral Theater, ein großes Theater im Westernstil mit überdachtem Auditorium und Bühne. Was von Außen nur wie eine übergroße Scheune aussieht, die der Rancher aus Holz errichtete, entpuppt sich im Inneren, sowie die Gäste die großen Eingangstore passiert haben, die auch einem Fort gut zu Gesicht stünden, als modern ausgestattetes Theater. Der rustikale Westernstil ist dabei aber nahtlos fortgeführt. So nehmen die Gäste nicht in weichen Sesseln, sondern auf Holzbänken ohne Rückenlehne Platz, die auf einer steilen Tribüne aufgestellt sind, so dass sich von jedem Platz eine gute Sicht eröffnet. Doch auch wenn alles aus Holz gemacht zu sein scheint und es wirkt, als habe der Rancher vor Jahren die Wild West Gemälde auf gegerbter Tierhaut für die Rückwand erstanden, so verbirgt sich dahinter doch modernste Technologie - eine top Sound- und Licht-Anlange, die die perfekte Show garantiert. Was das Theater aber wirklich so besonders macht, ist seine Bühne. Obwohl ebenfalls mit allen nötigen technischen Raffinessen ausgestattet, wird hier ausgenutzt, dass sich das Theater nicht wirklich in einem Gebäude befindet, sondern nur überdacht ist. Statt einer künstlichen Papp-Landschaft wird die Bühne so von einem Hügel mit echten Bäumen und Pflanzen begrenzt, and denn sich einige künstliche Felsen anschließen. Diese natürliche, lebende Szenerie gibt den Produktionen einen ganz besonderen Touch, besonders da sie immer speziell für das Theater entwickelt werden und so seine Szene ideal ausnutzen können. Zudem wird diese soweit nötig jeweils vorsichtig umgestaltet. Ein Prozess bei dem durchaus auch einmal der gesamte Charakter verändert wird, ohne dabei die grundlegenden Anlagen und Pflanzungen zu verändern, hat doch nicht jede Show hier unbedingt ein Verbindung zum Wilden Westen Kombiniert mit der beeindruckenden Größe der Bühne (tiefer, breiter und höher als gewöhnlich - wichtig unter anderem für mögliche Akrobatik-Einlagen) ist damit der ideale Rahmen für herausragende Produktionen mit großem Cast und detailreichen, beeindruckenden Bühnenbildern gegeben. Die Produktionen dieses Hauses durchbrechen Grenzen und setzen neue Standards für die Unterhaltung in Themenparks - und sollten auf keinen Fall verpasst werden! |

Even so it is not unusual for the waiting line to stretch all through the Cottonwood
Creek Ranch to the
Country
Cookout Barbecue this does not mean, that you will be turned away. The Chaparral
Theater has one of the largest capacities of any theater in the Disneyland Park,
so even late comers will be seated most times making this a great attraction
for those happening to walk buy just seconds before a show starts or for those
who do not want to stand in line for a show. Anyway it is still worth arriving at least 20 minutes before the show to get one of the best seats in the two middle sections of the auditorium. If you turned up late don't worry the view from the two sections to the left and right is very good too, only make sure that the huge coloumns lifting the roof up are not blocking a central part of your view. If you show up only shortly before the show starts and the main entrance opposite of the Critter Corral is already closed take a look at the back of the stands, as the entrances there are open till the very last second as long as seats are still available. Very often the CMs will close the main entrance about 5 minutes before the show and direct all guests to the rear entrances next to the Frontierland Depot. If your party includes young children you can shorten the waiting time a bit if one adult of your party leaves the line with the children and visits the petting zoo Critter Corral which is just opposite of the main entrance so he won't miss the opening of the doors and can return to the rest of the party in time. Stroller are not allowed in the theater and must be parked near the main entrance in a designated area. The first rows in the front (all on ground level) are reserved for guests with disabilities and young children, as they have a great, unobstructed view from there and are really close to the action. Parents should note that they are not allowed to sit next to their child in these rows, so all children must be able / willing to watch the show parted from their parents. But: their chances to be choosen for some interaction in the show (if any is taking place) are much higher here too! |
Sollte jüngere Kinder zu Ihrer Gruppe gehören, können Sie die Wartezeit verkürzen, indem ein Erwachsener mit den Kindern den Streichelzoo Critter Corral besucht, der direkt gegenüber der Haupteingangs des Theaters liegt, so dass auch die Öffnung der Tore nicht verpasst wird und sich die Gruppe rechtzeitig wieder in der Schlange zusammenfinden kann. Kinderwagen sind im Theater nicht zugelassen. Sie müssen in einem ausgewiesenen Bereich vor dem Haupteingang abgestellt werden. Die ersten Reihen (alle noch auf der untersten Ebene) sind für behinderte Gäste und Kinder reserviert, die von hier einen hervorragenden Blick haben und besonders nah am Geschehen sind. Eltern sollten allerdings bedenken, dass es ihnen nicht gestattet ist, neben ihren Kindern in diesen Reihen zu sitzen, diese also für die Dauer der Show von ihnen getrennt sind. Dafür haben die Kinder aber auch die besten Chancen ausgewählten zu werden, um bei der Show mitzumachen, falls es ein interaktives Element gibt. |

The Chaparral Theater is the theater with the most interesting history in the
Disneyland Park as it was not in place when the park opened in 1992. Instead
its inaugural season came in 1995 back then still as a true open air theater,
with no cover against the forces of nature neither for the guests nor for the
actors limiting its use to the summer months. In its first year it was used for a small western style song and dance show called "Hill Billy Hoedown" featuring the Mickey Mouse and friends in the wild west on a large but pretty simple stage with only a few sets. But this was all set to change in time for the summer of 1996 when "Pocahontas le Spectacle" took over - a major production with a large cast, live singing and elaborate sets - sets that are still a part of the theater as the Imagineers decided to create a whole natural landscape complete with hills, a river and a waterfall hiding the entrance to a cave in the rocks... with real plants! With the major effort going into the production it was sure that the Theater (back then sometimes called Chaparral Stage) was not only a temporary attraction so the old make shift stands in the auditorium got some extra attention too. As "Pocahontas" proofed to be a real hit production guest demand was so high that it not only returned every year till 1999 but DLP also looked into expanding its originally to the summer months limited run into spring and fall. In a first step the stands got a large roof (and some interesting wild west style drawings next to the director's room at the top of the stands) in 1997 before in time for early summer 1998 the stage area got covered too, basically creating a nearly fully enclosed theater alowing productions all year round (even so the cold winds of winter are still able to move in due the only partially closes sides). An opportunity that was used for the first time with "Mickey's Winter Wonderland" during the winter season 1998/99. Back then the Theatre got wat is till now its final look. Even so the natural scene on the stage has been adjusted to the later productions it still uses the major elements created for "Pocahontas" and the shape of the rocks and gentle hills with the real life trees on them staied the same. The setting is so unique that in 2001 the german TV-station Sat.1 even produced the season opening special of its hit show "Nur die Liebe zählt" (Love is all You need) here. The sets were already prepared as a snow landscape for "Mickey's Winter Wonderland" making it the prefect fit for the airing of the show on the 23rd of December. Fans of Disney Animation
should take a close look at the "wall" of the stage area toward the Cottonwood
Creek Ranch with Critter Corral. Right beneath the roof a wide transparent is
covering nearly all the way from the rear of the stage to the front of the stage
- advertised on it, with a big portrait, is a traveling western show starring
Slue Footed Sue, Pecos Bill's girlfriend from the segment with the same name
in the animated "Melody Time" (released 1948). |
Das Chaparral Theater ist das Theater mit der interessantesten Geschichte im
Disneyland Park, wurde es doch erst nach der Eröffnung ergänzt, um genau zu
sein 1995. Damals handelte es sich noch um ein echtes open air Theater, bei
dem Auditorium und Bühne den Kräften der Natur vollständig ausgesetzt waren,
so dass eine Bespielung nur im Sommer möglich war. So wurde es im ersten Jahr für eine Song and Dance Show namens "Hill Billy Hoedown" mit Mickey Maus und seinen Freunden im Wilden Westen eingesetzt, für die Bühne und Kulissen eher einfach gehalten waren. Das sollte sich aber 1996 mit der Premiere von "Pocahontas le Spectacle" ändern - dabei handelte es sich um eine aufwendige Produktion mit großer Besetzung, live Gesang und unglaublichen Kulissen, die bis heute Teil des Theaters sind! Die Imagineers hatten sich nämlich dazu entschlossen, als Kulisse eine echte Landschaft zu erschaffen, komplett mit Flusslauf, Hügeln und einem Wasserfall, der den Eingang einer Höhle verdeckt ... und mit echten Pflanzen! Mit diesen großen Bemühungen stand auch fest, dass das Theater (damals teilweise noch Chaparral Stage genannt) keine vorübergehende Einrichtung bleiben würde, also überarbeitete man auch die temporären Sitzränge. Von dem großen Erfolg von "Pocahontas", das bis 1999 immer wieder aufgenommen wurde, dennoch überraschte, bemühte man sich die Spielzeit der Produktion, die eigentlich auf die Sommermonate beschränkt war, in Frühjahr und Herbst auszudehnen. In einem ersten Schritt errichtete man dazu 1997 ein Dach über den Sitzplätze (und ergänzte interessante Wild West Gemälde neben der Regiekabine hinter der letzten Sitzreihe) und zur Sommersaison 1998 auch über der Bühne. So entstand ein beinahe völlig geschlossenes Theater, das rund um das Jahr bespielt werden kann (selbst wenn die kalten Winterwände wegen der nur teilweise geschlossenen Seitenwände noch immer in das Innere dringen können). Eine Gelegenheit die man in der Wintersaison 1998/1999 mit der Premiere von "Mickey's Winter Wunderland" auch gleich ausnutzte. Damals bekam das Theater, was bis heute seine endgültige Form ist. Und auch wenn die natürliche Landschaft für die neueren Produktionen angepasst wurde, so sind die aufgetürmten Felsen und sanften Hügel mit ihren dichten Bäumen noch immer die selben wie in "Pocahontas". Diese Szenerie ist so einmalig, dass 2001 der deutsche Sender Sat.1 hier sogar das Saisoneröffnungs-Special seiner Hit Show "Nur die Liebe Zählt" produziert. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt war die Bühne bereits als Schneelandschaft für "Mickey's Winter Wunderland" hergerichtet, was perfekt zum Ausstrahlungsdatum, dem 23. Dezember, passte.
Freunde der Disney Animation sollten einen genauen
Blick auf die "Wand" des Bühnenbereiches zur Cottonwood Creek Ranch und dem
Critter Corral
werfen. Direkt unter dem Dach dehnt sich ein Transparent fast
über die gesamte Tiefe der Bühne - beworben wird darauf eine reisende Western
Show mit Slue Foot Sue als Star, die auch portraitiert ist. Bekannt ist sie
als Freundin von Pecos Bill aus dem gleichnamigen Segment aus "Melody Time"
(veröffentlicht 1948). |
