The Big Bang of the Studios

As the last attractions closed at 11.00 pm the invited guests moved toward the Disney Bros. Plaza behind Studio 1 where three stages had been errected in front of the huge soundstage for the grand finale of the night about which guests knew nothing besides the title: A Starry Night / Nuit d'étoiles.

While the anticipation (and the crowds) grew a constant flow of waiters offering hors d'oeuvres, pastries and more champagne kept the guests bussy till 11.30 pm when the light all over the studios were dimmed and a powerful voice welcomed the audience to the finale take of the day...
To the rising sound of a huge orchestra projections of clap-boards, director-chairs, filmstrips and certainly that famous symbol formed by three circles drifted across the facade of Studio 1 and were followed by a short video projection till suddenly all the lights went off at the climax of the music. But with the next note another battery of lights bathed the three stages (the main one in front of Studio 1 and a smaller one on each side toward the soundstages 2 and 3) in colorfull lights illuminating the dancers who had stepped up while the audience had been following the projections.

In their wide, arabian-style pink and golden, orange trousers with fitting waistcoats, dress-coats or jackets, top-hats and white gloves they perfectly symbolized the mix of Disney-fantasy and Hollywood-magic and especially Hollywood-style in the bygone golden era - and for sure they were a delight to look at too as they danced their way through the rousing score based on famous themes out of the world of movies with projections on the facade in the background. Soon they were joined by countless castmembers filling all the available space between the guests and the stages. There costumes couldn't have differed more from the dancers on stage - while these clearly wore a kind of uniform the castmembers in front of the stage showed off the most diverse costumes as if they had jumped from all different movies. As these castmembers clearly were no professional dancers the choreography form them was abviously more subtle, while the dancers on stage really danced their feet away!

By the end of this rousing number that had the audience tapping along the whole cast turned around facing toward Studio 1. As the lights were dimmed huge projections of Disney heroines and some of the most outstanding love scenes (or scenes of appreciation in the case of Lumiere and Clocksworth) bridging the history of animated Disney Classics (from 101 Dalmatians to Aladdin and further) took over the facade of Studio 1 once more - and the tune was more than familiar too, as it was "When You Wish Upon a Star" the unofficial anthem of Disney. But this version? It was all new as it was performed live by Tina Arena, who was elevated right in front of the facade wearing a dark, wide dress which was flaping in the wind while she belted out her version of this timeless song, managing to stay true to its simple style that makes it so magic but at the same time also letting her wonderfull voice enough room to showcase her strength.

After her well earned applaus the dancers got back into action for another powerfull number. The music? Well, to some guests, among them Michael Eisner, it was familiar but to the majority it was not - it was a new recording of "Come With Me". This song by John Kavanaugh (music) and Carolyn Gardner (lyrics) had originally been recorded for the Grand Opening Ceremony of Tokyo DisneySea but was now heared with all new lyrics written especially for the occassion of the opening of the Walt Disney Studios (the original version of the song with English lyrics as used at the opening of Tokyo DisneySea is available on the 3-track-CD-single "Tokyo DisneySea Theme Music" in Japan or at Amazon.com). To the lengthy but rousing percussion performance that opens the song another breathtaking dance performance (especially on the stages) got underway which included some neat light effects realized by the castmembers in front of the stages with handheld but powerful lights while the melody and the impressive chorus gathered energy for the finale of the song - obviously an invitation to join the magic world of movie making at the Walt Disney Studios that was irresistable, regarding both the music and the visually impressive choreography.

When the song ended on a high note (far too early as this performance could have lasted way longer) the eyes of the cast went up into the sky behind the guests following huge fingers of light - the surprised guests turned around when the first explosion rang and another instrumental score set in...
In the sky above the Walt Disney Studios (or to be correct: far behind the Tram Tour Track) a spectacular fireworks display was set off illuminating the sky in thousands of colors. With light beams moving around and further enhancing the feeling of a movie premier, a bombastic soundtrack featuring melodies not only from Disney but Hollywood movies in general and not before seen firework effects this clearly was the most outstanding fireworks display since the Millennium Celebration with the 360-degree-fireworks all around the Main Street, U.S.A. No expenses had been spared for this grand finale of the WDS opening Gala as more and more fireworks went up into the night sky setting off a showher of thousands of colors and forming the most unexpected shapes in the sky corresponding to the music. But not only the length of the display and the number of fireworks were unprecedented also the special effects fireworks featured here, e.g. forming a heart's shape in the sky - they have yet to be put in use in any fireworks display in the Disneyland Park next doors.

But for the lucky invited guests and the fans who already had positioned themselves in front of the Studio gates to be among the first to enter the park on the next morning and who were now treated to the fireworks which could be seen above Studio 1 (even so without the score) this was not the time of comparison between the different fireworks - this was the grand finale of an unforgettable night and a fireworks display surely unforgettable in its own right for the stunning displays that earned a thundering applaus and never ending Ohhhs and Ahhhs. True, pure Disney magic in the sky!

  Als die letzte Attraktion um 23.00 Uhr schloss, versammelten sich die geladenen Gäste auf der Disney Bros. Plaza  hinter Studio 1, vor den dort errichteten drei Bühnen für das grosse Finale der Nacht, von dem bis dato nur der Titel bekannt war: A Starry Night / Nuit d'étoiles.

Während die Spannung (und die Zahl der Gäste) wuchs, versorgten eien ganze Reihe von Obern die Gäste mit Hors d'Oeuvre, süßen Kleinigkeiten und noch mehr Champagner, um die Zeit bis 23.30 Uhr zu überbrücken, als alle Lichter in den Studios gedimmt wurden und eine kraftvolle, dunkle Stimme die Gäste in der letzten Szene des Tages willkommen hieß...
Zum anschwellenden Klang eines großen Orchesters schwebten dann Projektionen von Filmklappen, Regiestühlen, Filmstreifen und natürlich das berühmte Symbol aus drei Kreisen über die Fassade von Studio 1, gefolgt von einer kurzen Videoprojektion als plötzlich alle Lichter am Höhepunkt der Musik erloschen. Doch schon mit dem nächsten Ton erstrahlte andere Scheinwerfer und tauchten die drei Bühnen (die zentrale Bühne direkt vor Studio 1 je eine kleinere Bühne an den beiden Seiten vor den Studios 2 und 3) und die Tänzer darauf in farbprächtiges Licht.

In ihren weiten, arabisch-wirkenden Hosen in Pink und Gold, Orange mit passenden Westen, Fracks oder Jacketts, Zylindern und weißen Handschuhen symbolisierten sie perfekt die Verbindung der Disney-Fantasie mit dem Zauber von Hollywood und besonders dem Stil aus seiner goldenen Ära - außerdem war es eine wahre Freude, ihnen zu zu sehen, wie sie sich durch die schwungvolle Nummer mit zahllosen bekannten Soundtrackmotiven tanzten, während wechselnde Projektionen den Hintergrund bildeten. Dabei wurden sie nach kurzer Zeit von zahlreichen Castmembern unterstützt, die den Raum zwischen den Gästen und den Bühnen füllten. Ihre Kostüme konnten nicht unterschiedlicher von denen der Tänzer sein - während jene einheitlich auftraten, trugen die Castmember vor den Bühnen die verschiedensten Kostüme, so daß der Eindruck entstand, sie währen den unterschiedlichsten Filmproduktionen entsprungen. Während die Choreographie für diese Gruppe, waren es doch keine ausgebildeten Tänzer, eher zurückhaltend war, tanzten sich die Profis auf den Bühnen wahrlich die Selle aus dem Leib!

Am Ende der mitreißenden Nummer, bei der die Gäste kaum ruhig stehen bleiben konnten, wandte der Cast den Gästen dann den Rücken zu und blickte erwartungsvoll auf das Studio 1 - während langsam die Lichter gedämpft wurden, erstrahlten dort Projektionen der weiblichen Disney Helden und schönsten Liebeszenen (obwohl das für Lumiere und Unruh nicht ganz passt), aus dem Universum des Disney Zeichentrickfilms von 101 Dalmatiner bis Aladdin und weiter. Passend dazu als musikalische Untermalung die inoffizielle Disney-Hymne "When You Wish Upon A Star" - allerdings in einer völlig neuen Version, live dargeboten von Tina Arena, die in ihrem weiten Kleid, das sich im Wind bauschte, vor der Fassade des Studio 1 auf einer verkleideten Hebebühne plaziert worden war und nun diesen zeitlosen Song kraftvoll intoniert, wobei es ihr gelang den Zauber, den die einfache Melodie eben durch ihre Einfachheit entfalten kann, zu wahren und gleichzeitig ihre wunderbare Stimme dennoch voll zur Geltung zu bringen.

Nach dem wohl verdienten Applaus traten dann die Tänzer wieder in Aktion. Die Musik dazu? Nun, einige Gästen, darunter Michael Eisner, dürfte sie bekannt vorgekommen sein, für die Mehrheit aber war sie völlig neu, handelte es sich doch um eine neue Aufnahme des Songs "Come With Me". Dieser Song von John Kavanaugh (Musik) und Carolyn Gardner (Text) war ursprünglich für das Grand Opening von Tokyo DisneySea produziert, wurde aber mit neuem Text speziell für die Eröffnung der Walt Disney Studios neu aufgenommen (die Original-Version des Songs mit englischem Text, wie bei der Eröffnung von Tokyo DisneySea zu hören, ist auf der 3-Track-CD-Single "Tokyo DisneySea Theme Music" in Japan und bei Amazon.com erhältlich). Zu der langen, kraftvollen Percussion-Einleitung des Songs setzten vor allem die Tänzer auf den Bühnen zu einer weiteren atemberaubenden Tanzshow an, die von einigen gelungenen Lichteffekten unterstützt wurde, die teilweise durch die Castmember vor den Bühnen realisiert wurden. Derweil gewann die Melodie und der Chor immer mehr Schwung für das Finale des Songs, eine Einladung in das Reich des Filmzaubers, in die Walt Disney Studios - keine Frage, einfach unwiderstehliche, sowohl dank der musikalischen Seite als auch dank der optisch beeindruckenden Choreographie.

Als der Song dann endete (viel zu früh, diese Darbietung hätte noch viel längern dauern können), folgten die Blicke des Cast den Lichtfingern in den Himmel über den Gästen - die überraschten Gäste allerdings drehten sich erst um, als der Knall der ersten Explosion durch die Studios hallte und die instrumentale Musik wieder einsetzte...
Der Himmel über den Walt Disney Studios (oder genauer: weit hinter der Tram Tour Strecke) wurde von einem spektakulären Feuerwerk in einem phantastischen Farbenspiel illuminiert. Mit Lichtfingern, die über den Himmel schwenkten, wie bei einer großen Filmpremiere, einem bombastischen Soundtrack, der nicht nur auf bekannte Disney Melodien sondern auf die ganze Breite der Hollywood-Soundtracks zurückgriff, und völlig neuen Feuerwerkeffekten präsentierte sich hier das herausragendste Feuerwerk seit den Millennium Feierlichkeiten mit ihrem 360-Grad-Feuerwerk rund um die Main Street, U.S.A. Für das große Finale der WDS Eröffnungs Gala wurden keine Unkosten gescheut - so rasten mehr und mehr Rakekten in den Himmel, begossen den Park mit einem wahren Farbenregen und bildeten die ungewöhnlichsten Bilder im Himmel im Einklang mit der Musik. Doch nicht nur die Länge und die Zahl der Raketen liessen dieses Feuerwerk herausragen, sondern auch die zahlreichen Effekte, wie das in den Himmel gemahlte Herz aus Feuerwerk, die so bisher nicht in den Feuerwerken im Disneyland Park eingesetzt wurden.

Doch für die glücklichen geladenen Gäste und die Fans, die sich bereits vor den Toren der Studios versammelt hatten, um am nächsten Morgen als erste in den neuen Park zu gelangen, und nun das Feuerwerk (wenn auch ohne musikalische Untermalung) über dem Studio 1 verfolgen konnten, war das nicht der Zeitpunkt zum Vergleichen der verschiedenen Feuerwerke - vielmehr war dies das große Finale einer unvergesslichen Nacht, ein Feuerwerk das selbst unvergesslich war dank seiner unglaublichen Momente und das donnernden Applaus ebenso wie nicht enden wollende Ohhhs und Ahhhs erntete. Echter, reiner Disney Zauber am Nachthimmel!
