A Legendary Tradition from China

 The impressive Chinese pagoda (which some guests may still remember from the Mulan Parade at the Disneyland Park) is the first sight guests get of the Chinese New Year's celebrations when they enter the Disney Village from the theme parks. This detailed setting not only looks as if Mulan and Mushu might pop in every second - they actually do! Being the master of ceremonies for this festival Mushu is not even afraid of the huge stone dragons, winding down the stairway leading up to the pagoda.

Behind it strings of red laterns cast their light over the Village's main street which is also adorned by numerous Chinese flags welcoming the Year of the Monkey, hung from the giant pilars that have been transformed into real works of art with over sized paintings showcasing scenes from the Chinese landscape. Even truely un-Chinese buildings as King Ludwig's Castle melt into the dense atmosphere thanks to a special lighting. Guests can enjoy this exotic flavour guaranteed every day, even if there should be rain as a long white covered walkway, illuminated in a warm red light, sneaks through the whole street past the displays of arts and craft from China and the food carts that are offering snacks with an asian twist. For a more luxuirous dinner the chefs at Cafe Mickey have come up with a whole Chinese menu during which Disney characters will join the fun to add the special Disney touch. But there is plenty to see and do out in the streets of the Disney Village too, so let's not get into the restaurant too early...

Once the artists have arrived for the daily opening of the festival by rickshaw they are happy to help guests of all ages learn some of the most cherished traditions from China... What about learning the art of creating animals and flowers out of single pieces of paper? Origami is sure to entertain you and your friends. Or why not learn the art of Calligraphy? If you hands are not calm enough for either of the two the craftsmen and -women are happy to entertain you with their displays and exhibitions of some pieces created already during the festival. Still to tiresome for you? Then why not feel the art of Chinese massage? Afterwards you should be ready to continue your stroll past the numerous pavillions put up in the Village and enjoy the kite exhibition which finally sets one thing straight: kite designs are not just made to improve flying abilities. Here original traditonal kites recreating animals from nature and fantasy are one display (and yes, they could fly).

In the Sports Bar the two traditional Chinese board games Mah Jong and GO await guests of all ages for a little play time under the oversight of expert players teaching beginners as well as seasoned players some new tricks. Afterwards when you have seen and maybe even tested some Asian traditions - it is time to treat you to some real Chinese tastes ... for that an original Chinese Tea Ceremony as well as the numerous Chinese foods on sale are surely a great answer. During you stroll down the Disney Village to create your very own Chinese menu don't forget to take a closer look at the numerous books placed along the path. They offer plenty of insight into Chinese traditions and what the Year of the Monkey actually means for ... YOU!

Let's see - we've got the arts and crafts, the food, the tea, the games, ... what is still missing? Ah, yes: Chinese acrobatics! Certainly they are not missing. Twice daily they awe the guests with their gravity defying displays - once in the afternoon on the Central Stage that has been transformed into a giant Chinese temple stage, and once at night to close the celebrations on the stage of Billy Bob's Country and Western Saloon. The Chinese acrobats comand both stages and present their art on a quality level rarely seen outside mainland China. So be sure to find a spot in front of the stage on time (the exact performance schedule can be found in the Disney Village programe handed out right on site). After the breathtaking acrobatics on the Temple / Central Stage things are bound to slow down a bit, which does not mean that it gets any less inspiring with the Tai Chi demonstration that blends right into a beginner's lesson - you did think you would wish to have the agility of those acrobats, didn't you?

While the demonstrations, displays and the show program during the afternoon is already impressive once the sun sets and the light of the lantern casts exotic patterns on walls and walkways the Disney Village is finally totaly transformed into an exotic, Chinese dream - and the bang of the big drums help when the loudly announce the procession of the Chinese performers and acrobats leading to the Temple / Central Stage, where the Chinese Circus Show is presenting a natural mix of Chinese dance with exotic rhythms, martial arts in their pure and original form and acrobatics blending into a huge vista of the traditions of the people of China. Here traditions come alive in breathtaking pictures created by the incredible arts of Chinese acrobats and performers. The performance presents the best of Chinese circus arts in style and quality comparable to the show Mulan that thrilled guests for years in the Disneyland Park and which is usually only on display at ticketed, high price events.

On selected days the performers in their colorful costumes are joined by the traditional creatures of Chinese tales for the huge Dragon Parade that takes the exotic colors, forms and sounds of China right among the guests and asks them to follow the large dragon in the famous Dragon Dance down to the shores of Lake Disney. There to the sounds of the symphonic score from Disney's animated classic Mulan the celebrations take into the sky as the tradition of Chinese Fireworks is showing off its best side. When the fountains of light shoot off into the sky, reflecting in the open waters of the lake who could not cheer for the new Chinese Year of the Monkey? While not a high altitude fireworks display, the countless, colorfull rockets and fountains of light, which seem to jump toward the guests, illuminate the space right above the waters of the lake in a very intense, brilliant show, while hundreds of small burning lights illuminate the lake itself - before it all comes to a rousing, one could say truly explosive finale  that shines as bright as the day and prooves: it's not the height but the perfect unity between a majestic score and creative fireworks presenting also never before at the resort seen effects that count.

If you do want to relieve the exotic atmosphere yourself the beginning of the year of the monkey in 2004 is celebrated with Disney's Chinese New Year at the Disney Village from the 10th to the 25th of January every Saturday and Sunday from 2.30 to 9.00 pm, weekdays from 4.00 to 9.00 pm. The Chinese fireworks will illuminate the sky only on the 10th, 12th, 14th, 16th, 18th, 20th, 22nd and 24th of January at 8.45 pm. As the fireworks take place on and above Lake Disney the Dragon Parade will guide the guests down to the lake on these days at 8.30 pm.

2004 saw the second celebration of the Chinese New Year at the resort - and so far the grandest. While in 2003 there were only minor celebrations in the Disney Village with few performances over the actual Chinese New Year's days on a scarcely decorated Central Stage, in 2004 the Village went all out with a complete decoration for the two week festival offering a huge list of performances and daily arts and crafts presentations in an exotic setting. This major expansion of the festival came, by chance, in the same year that France celebrated the Chinese New Year with Europe's largest Chinese parade and a special illumination of the Eiffel Tower as the president of the Republic of China visited capital of France.
But while the festival in the Village becam ea true magnet for guests the two event nights at the Walt Disney Studios from 2003 were not repeated, after low guest turnout for the hard-ticket event. During those nights guests had been treated to a fireworks display and similar presentations and shows that were now showcased in the Village without any cover charge.

 

Hinter ihr werfen Reihen roter Laternen ihr Licht auf die Hauptstraße des Village, das mit zahlreichen chinesischen Flaggen geschmückt ist, die das Jahr des Affen begrüßen. Sie baumeln von den riesigen Säulen, die mit aufwendigen Zeichnungen chinesischer Landschaften in Übergröße in echte Kunstwerke verwandelt wurden. Selbst vollkommen un-chinesische Gebäude wie King Ludwig's Castle passen sich dank besonderer Beleuchtung elegant in die dichte Atmosphäre ein. Das beste: die Gäste können die exotische Stimmung garantiert an jedem Tag genießen, selbst wenn es regnet, da sich eine lange weiße Überdachung, die in rotem Licht schimmert, entlang der Hauptstrasse zieht, vorbei an den Präsentationen chinesischer Künste und Traditionen sowie natürlich der Stände mit asiatischen Speisen. Ein komplettes chinesisches Menü haben die Köche im Cafe Mickey ersonnen, in dem Disney Charaktere während des Dinners die Gäste begrüßen. Doch auch den Straßen und Wegen des Village gibt es noch so viel zu entdecken, das man nicht zu früh das Restaurant aufsuchen sollte...

Nachdem die Künstler zur täglichen Eröffnung des Festivals via Rikshaw eingetroffen sind, freuen Sie sich Gästen jeden Alters einige der beliebtesten Traditionen Chinas näher zu bringen... Wie wäre es z.B. mit einer Lektion in Origami, der Kunst aus kleinen Papierblättern unzählige Tiere und Pflanzen erstehen zu lassen? Oder vielleicht doch lieber ein wenig Kalligraphie? Sollten die Hände für derartige Kunstwerke doch nicht ruig genug sein - kein Problem, die Künstler präsentieren auch gerne ihre Arbeiten und zeigen einige der bereits während dem Festival entstandenen Kunstwerke. Immer noch zu anstrengend? Wie wäre es dann mit chinesischer Massage? Natürlich nicht als Masseur. Danach reicht die Energie dann auch bestimmt wieder, um einen Blick auf die weiteren Pavillions im Village zu werfen mit ihren chinesischen Kunsthandwerkern. Dort findet sich dann z.B. eine Ausstellung chinesischer Flugdrachen - natürlich flugfähig aber anders als moderne Entwürfe unglaublich aufwendig gestaltet in den Formen der seltsamsten Tiere.

In der Sports Bar erwarten derweil die beiden chinesischen Brettspiele Mah Jong und GO die Gäste. Unter der Anleitung erfahrener Spieler haben hier Anfänger wie auch Fortgeschrittene gleichermaßen ihre Erfolgserlebnisse. Danach wird es dann Zeit, auch dem Gaumen an dem Festival teilhaben zu lassen - z.B. bei der echten Chinesischen Teezeremonie oder an einem der zahlreichen Stände mit chinesischen Speisen, die einladen, sich eing anz persönliches Menü zu kreieren. Während dem Rundgang lohnt es sich auch einen Blick auf die aufgeschlagenen Bücher zu werfen, die entlang des Weges plaziert wurden. Hier finden sich Informationen rund um die chinesischen Traditionen und die Bedeutung des Jahres des Affens ... auf für SIE!

Damit hätten wir dann Kunsthandwerk, Speisen, Tee, Brettspiele, ... was fehlt da noch? Ah, ha: chinesische Akrobatik! Natürlich fehlt sie nicht. Zweimal täglich begeistern chinesische Akrobaten und setzen scheinbar die Erdanziehung außer Kraft - das erste mal am Nachmittag auf der Central Stage, die in eine große chinesische Tempelbühne verwandelt wurde, und einmal am späten Abend auf der Bühne von Billy Bob's Country and Western Saloon. Mit ihren Darbietungen, wie sie sonst nur selten in dieser Perfektion außerhalb Chinas zu erleben sind, begeistern die Akrobaten immer wieder ihr Publikum. Daher lohnt es sich auch, sich rechtzeitig seinen Platz vor der Bühne zu sichern (die genauen Auftrittszeiten finden sich im Disney Village Programm, das vor Ort erhältlich ist). Nach der atemberaubenden Akrobatik ist dann auf der Central / Tempel Bühne etwas Entspannung angesagt mit einer Tai Chi Vorführung samt Anfängerstunde - schließlich wären wir alle gerne so gelenkig wie die Akrobaten, oder?

Die Darbietungen, Shows und Vorführungen während des Nachmittages sind sicherlich beeindruckend, doch wenn es dämmert und der Schein der Laternen seltsame Muster auf die Wege wirft, dann verwandelt sich das Disney Village endgültig in einen exotischen, chinesischen Traum - der dumpfe Schlag der großen Trommeln beim Umzug der Künstler und Akrobaten zur Tempel  / Central Bühne trägt zu diesem Eindruck sicherlich bei. Auf der Bühne ist es dann nämlich Zeit für die Chinesische Zirkus Show mit einer natürlichen Mixture aus chinesischem Tanz mit seinen exotischen Rhythmen, Kampfkunst in ihrer reinsten Form und natürlich Akrobatik. Hier wird vor den Augen des Publikums ein lebendiges Bild der Traditionen und des Volkes von China gezeichnet, das einfach den Atem raubt. Die Darbietung präsentiert beste chinesische Zirkuskunst - in Qualität und Stil zu vergleichen mit der Show Mulan, die jahrelang das Publikum im Disneyland Park begeisterte, und wie sie sonst nur selten und zu teuren Ticketpreisen zu erleben ist.

An ausgewählten Tagen ziehen die Künstler der Zirkusshow im Anschluss mit den gigantischen Wesen der chinesischen Fabelwelt in der großen  Drachen-Parade durch das Village und bringen die exotischen Farben, Formen und Klänge Chinas direkt unter die Gäste, die eingeladen sind, sich der Parade anzuschließen und ihr zu den Ufern des Lake Disney zu folgen. Dort wird untermalt von den symphonischen Klängen aus Disney's Zeichentrickklassiker Mulan die Feier im Himmel zum Abschluss gebracht: mit einem traditionellen chinesischen Feuerwerk! Wenn die leuchtenden Fontainen in den Himmel schießen und sich im ruhigen Wasser des Lake Disney spiegeln, wer könnte da nicht den Beginn des Jahres des Affens bejubeln? Zwar kein Höhenfeuerwerk, dafür aber umso intensiver - die zahlreichen Raketen und Lichterfountainen, die scheinbar auf den Gast zuspringen, lassen den Raum über dem See mit einer brillianten, intensiven Show erstrahlen, während hunderter, kleiner brennender Lichter die Wasseroberfläche zum Glühen zu bringen scheinen - bevor alles in einem beeindruckenden, man könnte sagen explosiven, Finale mündet, dessen Licht so hell wie der Tag ist und einmal mehr beweist: es kommt nicht auf die Höhe an, sondern auf die hier perfekte Verbindung eines majestätischen Scores mit kreativen Feuerwerk, das sogar einige noch nie im Resort gesehene Effekte präsentiert.

Wenn auch Sie die exotische Atmosphäre genießen wollen: das Jahr des Affens 2004 wird im Rahmen von Disney's Chinese New Year im Disney Village vom 10. bis 25. Januar Sam- und Sonntags von 14.30 bis 21.00 Uhr und während der Woche von 16.00 bis 21.00 Uhr gefeiert. das Chinesische Feuerwerk über dem Lake Disney samt Drachen Parade findet am 10., 12., 14., 16., 18., 20., 22. und 24. Januar um 20.30 bzw. 20.45 Uhr statt.

Die Feierlichkeiten 2004 sind as zweite Jahr in dem das chinesische Neujahrsfest im Resort zelebriert wird. 2003 allerdings waren die Feiern im Disney Village auf einige wenige Darbietungen auf der spärlich geschmückten Central Stage an den eigentlichen Neujahrstagen beschränkt, während 2004 das gesamte Village für das zweiwöchige Festival geschmückt wurde und zahlreiche Darbietungen, kunsthandwerkliche Vorführungen und Ausstellungen arrangiert wurden. Diese große Erweiterung der Feier fand zufällig in dem selben Jahr statt, in dem anlässlich des Besuchs des chinesischen Präsidenten Paris die größte chinesische Parade Europas zum Neujahrsfest und eine spezielle Illumination des Eiffel Tower präsentierte. Doch während das Festival im Disney Village zum neuen Publikumsmagneten wurde, wurden die zwei speziellen Eventnächte in den Walt Disney Studios von 2003 nicht wiederholt - wohl auch wegen der geringen Nachfrage für die Hard-Ticket-Events. Im übrigen boten die beiden Abendveranstaltungen 2003 ihren Gästen mit Feuerwerk und verschiedenen Vorführungen und Shows kein wesentlich von dem Angebot des Disney Villages in 2004 abweichendes Programm, das dort allerdings nunmehr ohne Ticket zugänglich war.
