Mickey's Nutcracker, as the Christmas parade at Disneyland Paris is called, premiered in the season 1997/98 without any major Disney characters besides Mickey and friends at the opening of the parade. It was remodelled in time for the season 1998/99 to include the most beloved pairs of lovers from the animated classics. With some minor changes (especially in the musical part) the parade then returned each year till the end of the season 2002.

As the title suggests it is musically based on the famous ballet by Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky, whose music was rearranged by Vasile Sirli and Dave Volpi for the special needs of an open air parade, who thereby condensed all the famous and beloved movements of the composition into the roughly 18 minutes the parade runs. The result is a perfect, compared to the original even more powerful, Christmas soundtrack, that delights lovers of classical music just as much as the guests lining up alongside the parade rout at Disneyland Paris. The famous music, which are firmly connected to Christmas, not only set a fitting backdrop full of musical diversity for the holiday parade but also will heighten the Christmas mood of all the guests.

As soon as the first sounds of the overture are echoing through the cold air several horse drawn coaches appear making it's way down the rout - inside sitting are Chip'n Dale (with their very own christmas tree), Goofy, Donald, Daisy, Goofy, Donald and last but not least Mickey and Minnie all wearing their special festive clothes for this celebration and waving to the gleaming faces of the children...

After this opening in a laid back Disney style the first act of the parade (which is diverted into three acts) continues with an dancing orchestra whose member graciously follow the flow of the music in wide movements. Right behind them comes what is today firmly associated with Christmas: an marching army of red-white toy soldiers who are escorting their commander, an gigantic nutcracker (fitting to the musical theme) with risen sword towering atop of a toy horse, which itself rests on a large drum.

Christmas is celebrated everywhere - so the second act sets out to show Christmas is an favourite of some beloved Disney characters, too! Dive deep and you will meet Arielle's friends in an swirling underwater ballet, which she observes together with her prince Erik from a boat high above under the save eyes of her father King Triton. It's Christmas time at the castle of the Beast too, where Belle in her heavy winter gown turns to the music on top of the large float ... from dancing household objects it's only a short step to dancing vegetables and flowers which accompany Cinderella who is sitting together with her prince in the glass coach magically created out of a pumpkin. A more distinguished fellowship have assembled Sleeping Beauty and her prince: waltzing Russian princess' and princes in their stunning festive clothes. Sleeping Beauty and her prince in the meantime are fighting against Malefiz as a dark dragon. But there is still one pair of lovers left... Jasmine and Aladdin. See how they fly above Agrabah on their flying carpet - can they see all the guests standing far below? Yes, they are waving. But be aware, a fire breathing dragon is right behind them!

Now it's time - as the music rises they are coming round the corner elegant ladies of the court and lovely snowmen dancing along to the classical music that rises and rises as now he is coming: Santa Claus himself. Sitting on top of his impressive golden sleigh packed with countless presents, big and small, he is sending his warm smile to all the children and adults standing at the route and gasping at this majestic view of a sleigh drawn by four real reindeer. This float provides a fitting, season climax to a wonderful parade that will set children and adults alike in the state of wonder. Here, at Disneyland Paris, Santa Claus is just as real as you and me!

For all who want to know a bit more it might be interesting to note, that not only the majestic sleigh of Santa Claus has been present in the original Christmas Parade of the park from 1992 till 1996, but that the five floats with Disney characters now forming the second act, which were added in 1998 to the parade, are minimal redecorated floats from other parades of Disneyland Paris. Arielle's float just as the one of Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin are from the Wonderful World of Disney Parade, while Cinderella's coach and the Sleeping Beauty float with a really impressive and for some very small children maybe frightening dragon come from the original Disney Parade, that was performed (in different versions) from 1992 till the end of 1996. All the floats have been outfitted with some additional Christmas decorations, which are, to stay objective, only minor compared to the size and detail of the floats.

But be assured: this parade enchants and is a manifestation of the magic and wonder of Christmas that is more than worth waiting for in the cold air.

Mickey's Nutcracker (Mickey's Nussknacker), wie die Weihnachtsparade genannt wird, feierte in der Saison 1997/98 ihre Premiere - damals noch ohne Disney Charaktere außer Mickey und seinen Freunden. So kam es zur Weihnachtszeit 1998/99 zu einer Umgestaltung, in deren Rahmen die beliebtesten Liebespaare der Disney Klassiker aufgenommen wurde. BIs zum Ende der Saison 2002 kehrte die Parade dann mit kleinen Veränderungen (hauptsächlich im musikalischen Bereich) jährlich zur Freude der Besucher zurück.

Wie der Name schon andeutet, basiert sie musikalisch auf dem bekannten Ballet von Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky, dessen Musik von Vasile Sirli und Dave Volpi für die Bedürfnisse der Parade neu arrangiert wurde, so dass jetzt alle berühmten Melodien in den rund 18 Minuten konzentriert sind. Das Ergebnis ist ein perfekter, im Vergleich zum Original noch kraftvollerer, Weihnachts-Soundtrack, der Liebhaber klassischer Musik und die Gäste entlang der Wege gleichermaßen begeistert. Die beliebten Kompositionen, die allgemein mit Weihnachten verbunden werden, liefern nicht nur einen passenden Hintergrund voller Abwechslung für die Parade sondern heben auch die festliche Stimmung aller Gäste.

Sobald die ersten Töne der Ouvertüre erklingen, erscheinen A- und B-Hörnchen (mit ihrem eigenen Weihnachtsbaum), Goofy, Donald, Daisy, Goofy, Donald und selbstverständlich Mickey und Minnie, alle in ihrer Festtageskleidung, in festlich geschmückten Pferdekutschen, von denen aus sie den Kindern, die mit glänzenden Augen am Wegrand stehen, zuwinken...

Nach dem eher langsamen Beginn im Disneystil setzt ein tanzendes Orchester, dessen Mitglieder graziös dem Fluss der Musik in weiten Bewegungen folgen, den ersten Akt (der insgesamt in drei Akte geteilten Parade) fort. Im Anschluss folgen stramm marschierende rot-weiße Spielzeugsoldaten, die ihren Kommandanten eskortieren: einen gigantischen Nussknacker (passend zur musikalischen Gestaltung) mit erhobenem Säbel hoch zu Ross, oder genauer hoch auf einem Spielzeugpferd, das auf einer Trommel thront.

Weihnachten wird allenorten gefeiert - wie der zweite Akt zeigt auch bei Disney Figuren. Tief unter der See trifft der Gast die Freunde Arielles bei einem schwungvollen Unterwasserballett, das Ariell zusammen mit Prinz Erik aus einem Boot unter den wachsamen Augen König Tritons beobachtet. Auch im Schloss des Biests ist Weihnachtszeit; so dreht sich Belle in ihrem festlichen Winterkleid zur Musik hoch auf dem imposanten Wagen ... von tanzenden Haushaltsgegenständen ist es nur ein kleiner Schritt zu tanzenden Gemüsen und Pflanzen, die Cinderella und ihren Prinzen begleiten, wie sie in ihrer Gläsernen Kutsche, die einst ein Kürbis war, durch die Straßen gleiten. Ein erhabeneres Gefolge hat sich Dornrösschen angeschlossen: russische Prinzessinnen und Prinzen die sich im Walzertakt drehen und wiegen. Dornrösschen und ihr Prinz müssen derweil gegen die böse Malefiz kämpfen, die als dunkler Drachen erscheint. Noch ein Liebespaar hält die Parade bereit: Jasmine und Aladdin. Auf ihrem fliegenden Teppich schweben sie hoch über Agrabah - ob sie all die Schaulistigen sehen können? Ja, sie winken. Aber Vorsicht, direkt hinter ihnen - ein feuerspeiender Drachen!

Und dann ist es Zeit - die Musik schwillt an und es erscheinen elegante Hofdamen und lustige Schneemänner, die zur klassischen Musik die Straße hinabtanzen, während diese immer mehr und mehr sich steigert, bis er endlich kommt: Santa Claus! Hoch auf seinem Schlitten voller Geschenke thront er und schickt den Kindern sein warmes Lächeln, während sie den majestätischen Schlitten gezogen von 4 echten Rentieren bewundern. Dies ist ein passender Höhe- und Schlusspunkt für eine Parade, die Kinder und Erwachsene ohne Unterschied in eine Welt der Wunder trägt. Hier, im Disneyland Paris, ist Santa Claus so real wie Du und ich.

Für alle die noch immer ein bisschen mehr wissen wollen, ist es sicherlich interessant, dass nicht nur der prächtige Schlitten des Weihnachtsmann bereits in der ersten Weihnachtsparade von Disneyland von 1992 bis 1996 zu sehen war, sondern dass auch die fünf erst 1998 ergänzten Wagen mit Disney Figuren aus anderen Paraden des Disneyland Park stammen. Arielles Wagen, ebenso wie der zu Die Schöne und das Biest sowie Aladdin stammt aus der Wonderful World of Disney Parade, während Cinderellas Kutsche und der Dornrösschen-Wagen mit dem beeindruckenden (und für kleine Kinder eventuell auch ein bisschen Angst einflössenden) Drachen der original Disney Parade entstammen, die von 1992 bis 1996 (in verschiedenen Versionen) zu sehen war. Alle Wagen sind mit zusätzlichen Weihnachtsdekorationen geschmückt, die aber im Vergleich zur Größe und dem Detailreichtum der Wagen eher gering ausgefallen sind.

Aber seien sie versichert: diese Parade verzaubert wirklich, ist sie doch eine Manifestation der Magie und des Wunders Weihnachtens, die mehr als die Wartezeit in der Kälte wert ist.

No matter where you want to watch the parade, depending on how crowded the park is, you should show up 15 to 30 minutes in advance. The only place to watch the parade while sitting is at the Castle Stage, but these seats (which are really cold in the winter) are occupied very long in advance. But what about combining a great dinner or lunch with a good view out of the warmth? Both is provided on the first floor of Walt's on the Main Street U.S.A. but Castmembers won't be able to guarantee you a window-seat in advance.

Most guests line up along the Main Street U.S.A. and Central Plaza for the unique sight of the parade with the castle as backdrop, while it is by far less crowded in Fantasyland in front of and opposite of the Pizzeria Bella Notte. There are also four points from where to get an "on the top"-view of the parade: right in front of the queuing area of It's A Small World, the balcony on top of the director's booth behind the seats of the Castle Stage, the pavilion at Town Square and finally the Main Street Station of the railroad (usually the most crowded of this four places that expecially the photographers like).

The classical soundtrack of the parade has been recorded by the Fisyo Prague orchestra especially for Disneyland Paris. The very energetic recording, that is actually used for the parade, has also been released by Disneyland Paris on several CDs. Currently available at the resort are the original version used till the season 1998/1999 on the single-CD "La Parade De Noel" and the current version used as of the season 1999/2000 on the CD "Les Parades en Musique" (edition 2000) (the premier version was also available on the CDs "Noel a Disneyland Paris" (edition 1998) and "Les Parades en Musique" (edition 1998)). Both are using the same recording as the difference are only a few seconds cut out and a change in the run of some tracks. A short excerpt (running 4:17) was created especially for the CD "L'Album Anniversaire - 10 Disneyland Paris" (EDDA018-2) but contains no new material.
Only of interest for collectors is the note that as the only track from the original Christmas parade that ran from 1992 till 1996 an 2:32 long instrumental-medley with Christmas-songs and the Disney-classic "When You Wish Upon a Star" has been released on the CD "Noel a Disneyland Paris" (edition 1996), that was used as score for the majestic Santa Claus' sleigh that is the highlight of Mickey's Nutcracker, too.
