The Dragon’s Regimen

Monday, November 7th, 2011

As widely reported the Sleeping Beauty Castle at the heart of the Disneyland Park has returned from its extensive rehab earlier this year more beautiful than in a long time. However, there us still one area that is off-limit for guests currently where a rehab is still on-going: the dungeon / caves under the castle.

All three entrances are closed off – the gates in front of the bridge leading to the front entrance are closed, a special construction wall blocks the rear entrance and the gates in front of the stairway leading from Merlin’s shop down into the cave are also closed.

However, with a bit of luck guests may be able to catch a glimpse of the ongoing work from inside Merlin’s shop despite a black tarp which is supposed to prevent guests from seeing behind the magic (see photo above)…

No More Annual Passes…

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

… at the office inside the park as it is completely covered for renovation. The whole area is blocked of and the building is no longer accessible. Even the path in front of the building is completely blocked, forcing guests to walk right next to the Castle stage, an area that has been refurbished not so long ago.

But what about the Annual passes you might ask. Well, it has brought back to the old location outside the park at the Donald’s Desk. When you need to exchange your ticket, get a new Annual Pass or need to extend your existing pass you will have to go to the “old” location at the side of the ticket booths.

When you arrive at the Disneyland park and you are in front of the beautiful Disneyland hotel walk to the right side towards the hotel’s entrance. Just across the entrance, on the side of the Disneyland Park ticket booths, you will see a small office named Donald’s Desk. Until further notice, or until the refurbishment is finish, this will be the location to get your Annual Passes.

Finally …another CRPR

20110521-100131.jpgThe refurbishment of Sleeping Beauty Castle at the heart of the Isneyland Park is making huge progress over the last few days. As can be seen in the photos all scaffold on the front facade of the castle has disappeared in the meantime – including the scaffolding in front of the arcades to the right of the castle. However, as a close up shows there is still some work to be done to some parts of the latter. Note how fresh and pristine the refurbished part looks and how worn down in comparison the columns of the arcade closer to the camera.

20110521-100113.jpgHowever, this should require only a rather fast touchup job. Just take a look at the impressive effect of the new coating on the detailed stone work on the back side of the castle facing toward the Snow White area.

20110521-100157.jpgWith the scaffolding completely down on the front the waterfall to the left of the castle has been turned back on again as well. However, work is not fully finished and painters can be seen working on e castle from a crane at times.also not all turrets are finished yet, even so another white (i.e. primed) roof top has received is final blue color in the meantime. Those turrets still missing are supposed to receive a golden roof top.

Meanwhile the work on the back facade facing into Fantasyland is making visible progress as well – the first scaffolding is already coming down again here!

Here we go: CRPR (UPDATED)

20110508-101705.jpg

20110508-101718.jpgIt’s time for another CRPR (Castle Rehab Progress Report) thanks to InsideDLParis. As can be seen in his latest photo the scaffolding continues to go up further on the back side, now reaching as high as the top of the large roof structure. While there had been some scaffolding nearly as high already a week ago (when our prior CRPR was released), back then the scaffolding was only consisting of the the base structure which now has been filled in with extra layers allowing the crews to actually get out and about to do their job.

Also compared to the prior CRPR progress is visible concerning the painting on the turrets’ roofs. Where only white primer / base paint was visible now the new blue and golden colors have taken over. Albeit, the two smaller turrets’ top parts are still completely missing, being backstage to receive their refurbishment on ground level.

UPDATE:
CreativeAlan tweeted a link to a recent photo of the front facade of the castle (facing toward Ental Plaza) from an unknown source. The up-to-date photo shows that nearly all scaffolding on the front facade has now been taken down – just low level scaffolding just above the moat for the two low towers flanking the entrance gate and some scaffolding higher up a hit to the back in one other spot remains. However, the arcade toward the right9; the castle is still behind scaffolding. As there is also still a printed on scrim mounted to tha scaffolding it can be expected that ts scaffolding will stay up a bit longer.

Another CRPR (Castle Rehab Progress Report)

Sunday, May 1st, 2011

To end the weekend another quick CRPR – Castle Rehab Progress Report. In our last CRPR courtesy of InsideDLParis we talked about the front facade and how the tarps have come down there. Now, let’s just walk around the castle for a change to it’s backside!

The scaffolding continues to grow further upwards here. And there are still only white tarps here – no printed on replica’s of the facade. But then most guests photograph the front facade from Central Plaza and not the – equally beautiful – back facade, so the use of white tarps might impect most guests less.

In addition to the further upward extension of the scaffolding there are some more details visible here. Firstly the fact that the elements of  two turrets have been taken off for the rehab – as mentioned in our last CRPR – is easily visible here. The first “beheaded” turret sits between the two turrets with the already dark blue roofs, to the right of the highest turret. The second “beheaded” turret is on the left side of the castle, peeking just above the highest part of the scaffolding at its far left end.

Also the turrets’ roofs primed to receive their new paint job can be identified very easily in this photo. Note that the roof of the highest turret – while it already got painted on the front side – is still sporting the white primer on the backside.

Another Castle Rehab Progress Report – with a photo from TODAY

Saturday, April 30th, 2011

Picking up where we left with yesterday’s CRPR (Castle Rehab Progress Report) thanks to InsideDLParis (aka Matthew Burggraeve) we can now present you with the latest developments of the most prominent current refurbishment project at Disneyland Paris: Sleeping Beauty Castle.

As a reminder we start out with a photo taken on Wednesday, April 27th – seen on the left. It shows the castle still with all tarps up at the front facade but already with a white roof on the highest turret and the roofs completely missing on the second turret to the left of it as well as (barely visible in the photo) on the second turret on the right half of the castle if coutning up from the top of the scaffolding.

As already reported yestereday the tarps at the front facade of the castle starting coming down yesterday … revealing that also some work was done to the rockwork at the base of the castle – including the picturesque waterfall to the left of the draw bridge, which can be seen in our next photo on the left.

The third and final photo of today’s CRPR courtesy of InsideDLParis shows the castle at (roughly) 10:30 am today, Saturday April 30th. As all the tarps have come down on the front facade of the actual castle the new colors cal already be seen through the remaining scaffolding. A look at the right border of the photo shows that the printed on tarps are still up on the scaffolding covering the archway leading from the castle to the right (so behind the Castle Stage).

Also note that the roof of the top turret, that had been stripped of the old colors on Wednesday now already received it’s paint job with the new color scheme selected. A comparison of the two photos of the castle from Wednesday (April 27) and today (April 30). Shows further progress – sure the roofs of on the two turrets mentioned above are still missing. But there are now three more roofs of turrets that are all wait, that means that have been prepared to receive their new paint job: the small side turret on the highest turret as well as the next two turrets to the right from it in the photo.

While the rehab of the castle will continue for a while longer with the scaffolding at its front facade coming down guests will soon be able to get their traditional souvenir photos once again in front of a shining, good-as-new castle!

Castle Rehab – a progress report

Friday, April 29th, 2011

The castle rehab project is gathering up speed … faster and faster. Take a look at the photos accompanying this report. They were taken last weekend and still show all of the tarps up on the front facade of the castle. As of yesterday, Thursday April 28, 2011, these tarps have started coming down on the front facade of the main part of the castle.

Already gone by yesterday evening was the tarp surrounding the facade around the actual gate into the castle. I.e. we are talking about the printed on tarps as seen in the photo on the right, not the white tarps covering the arcade leading from the main body of the castle to the right (behind the Castle Stage). Also visible again was the waterfall to the left of the castle, which received a rehab as well (but certainly was still turned off as the scaffolding was still in place.

While the scaffolding was still up after the tarps came down, expect the scaffolding to follow soon. Also the entrance walkway from Central Plaza to the Dragon’s cave under the castle has been blocked with a green construction wall to park a large crane behind that is used in the current phase of the construction.

However, the tarps on the front facade weren’t the only things that came down. Also down is the golden / blue color on selected roofs of the castle’s turrets. As of Wednesday the complete roof of the highest turret was all white as it was prepped to receive its new paint job.

To see photos of the latest progress, including the revealed, rehabed waterfalls, the tarps taken down and the turret’s white roof check out the tweets by InsideDLParis (Matthew Burggraeve) or head straight to his twitpic account!

Repaving Continuing (updated)

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

The ground that guest stand on during their Disneyland visit is mostly forgotten or overlooked by many but it is a solid part of the story and important to make sure that the magic keeps alive, even under your feet.

It’s nice to look up and see a wonderful and colorful castle, but if the path that you walk on doesn’t look good or isn’t maintained it would take away from the full picture, breaking the illusion of the magic. To make sure guest get nothing but the best, even for their feet that are feeling the pressure of strolling hours in the park, Disney is making sure the paths and the grounds around it are in perfect condition. At this time one of these projects is taking place in Fantasyland.

Leave the castle on your rights going to the left side walking into Fantasyland guests pass the beautiful, but unfortunately underused, Castle Stage. Right in front of the Castle Stage guest could brows around it or sit on one of the many benches that used to be full with guests visiting the great shows on the castle. At this time the whole area has been blocked of with the standard green fences including with the regular “for your future enjoyment” signs. The whole are is being repaved to make the area look new and freshed up again. This is a second phase in refurbishing this area as work in and around the Castle Stage area already took place a while ago.

During the refurbishment guest will also be unable to go to the wishing well that can be found just behind the castle stage area and that connects the side of the of the castle with the left hand path way to Fantasyland. A gray fence is looking the entrance from the castle onto the wishing well area. No chance to go and make a wish at this time, however who would need to make any wish when they are in Disneyland Paris.

UPDATE:
As  a look behind the fence provided by InsideDLParis via twitpic reveals the repaving is making fast progress. Already the area between the actual stage and the Central Plaza seems to be finished. However, the bricks seem to be used not only to replace the concrete on this part of the parade route but also the floor of the former auditorium (from which the benches were removed several weeks ago).

How to renovate a castle

Thursday, March 31st, 2011

Behind that huge scaffolding surrounding Sleeping Beauty Castle more is going on that must a simple cleaning and repainting. The workers are also conducting extensive repair and “reconstruction” work. One of the areas this can be spotted rather well are the ornate stone railings on the castle grounds. So what is going on there? (more…)

Bright New Rose

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

As reported on Monday with extensive photo coverage the complete rehab of the Sleeping Beauty Castle at the hear of Disneyland is coming along nicely. While the view on the lower half of the strucutre is mostly hidden behind the scaffolding and planes, work on the upper half can be spotted more easily. In particular the upper turrets seem to have received a new coating in bright rose / pink already. (more…)
