Fun on the ice skating rink

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

In time for the winter season the giant Zorb balls have left the Rockefeller Plaza at Disney’s Hotel New York and in their place the ice skating rink has returned. During the Halloween weekend already guests of all ages took turns on the rink during daytime as well as night time hours, when the rink is illumuniated.

During nighttime a new lighting feature of the fountain between the ice skating rink and the hotel entrance further adds to the atmosphere. The lights ”under” the individual fountains in the long rectangular bassin at the top of the rink used to illuminate the fountains constantly. Now these lights regularly turn on and off individually under the different fountains further livening up the scene.

However, as of later today guests on the rink will also be able to enjoy a more festive holiday atmosphere. Just as this post is published the hotel’s christmas tree is set up at the top of the ice skating rink above the water bassin (which had to be drained temporarily to allow for the installation of the platform for the tree in the bassin).

Ice Skating in Summer Time

Monday, August 9th, 2010

With the installation of the artifical (=”synthetic”) ice rink on the Rockefeller Plaza in front of Disney’s Hotel New York last winter (check out our report from last October for details) everything had been set up the first time ever for a year round operation of the “Rockefeller Rink”. Gone are the noisy go-carts respectively the fun-bikes that had taken over the area in the past years. Certainly the ice rink is the aesthetically (as well as regarding the noise if compared to the go-carts) much better option (even so the wide open water surface with the detailed map of Manhattan underneath it that originally took the place of the ice rink in 1992 is still missed by long-time fans).

The only problem: with the synthetic ice rink not offering any cooling effect to those skating (since it is assembled out of special “plastic” elements) the numbers of skaters has been rather small during the hot weeks of summer. To help cool the guests down while skating (and give them more of a traditional ice skating experience) the resort has installed a large fan above the rink at the edge of the fountain that sits elevated between the rink and the central lobby building. Said fan is not only creating a pleasant draft of air but also sprays a water mist off and gives guests the impression of a cooling effect (similar misting fans are used e.g. in queue lines many parks in Florida).

Ice Skating on Rockefeller Plaza – or not?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Traditionally the center piece of Rockefeller Plaza between Lake Disney and Disney’s Hotel New York during the cold months of the year is the so called ”Rockefeller Rink” – an ice skating rink that guests enjoyed since 1992. So when the cart track (that in the recent years is the summer alternative) closed down and was taken down in early September (as reported) the work taking place behind hastily set up construction walls was certainly assumed to be the usually installation of the ice skating rink. However, that assumption turned out to be wrong, when the walls came down and the date of the official opening of the rink (last Saturday) arrived … (more…)

Just Outside New York

Hotel New YorkWe already mentioned the closure of the go-karts at the New York Hotel a little while ago. The Go-karts are rented out so children can have a little race around a set up track. The Track is laid out at the ice skate ring and is only open during the busy summer month season. With winter nearing, the go-karts are being put away.

Hotel New YorkThe area has now been completely fenced off in preparation for the colder seasons. Some work is being done on the pavement that surrounds the inner ring. Work should not take too long and the area will most likely be re-opened before the busy winter time. Watch out for the popular ice skate ring to open soon after…
