Fun on the ice skating rink

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

In time for the winter season the giant Zorb balls have left the Rockefeller Plaza at Disney’s Hotel New York and in their place the ice skating rink has returned. During the Halloween weekend already guests of all ages took turns on the rink during daytime as well as night time hours, when the rink is illumuniated.

During nighttime a new lighting feature of the fountain between the ice skating rink and the hotel entrance further adds to the atmosphere. The lights ”under” the individual fountains in the long rectangular bassin at the top of the rink used to illuminate the fountains constantly. Now these lights regularly turn on and off individually under the different fountains further livening up the scene.

However, as of later today guests on the rink will also be able to enjoy a more festive holiday atmosphere. Just as this post is published the hotel’s christmas tree is set up at the top of the ice skating rink above the water bassin (which had to be drained temporarily to allow for the installation of the platform for the tree in the bassin).

Empire State Club Lunch

Saturday, March 26th, 2011

The Empire State Club at Disney’s Hotel New York is normally reserved for guests staying in one of the hotel’s suites or upscale Empire State Club rooms. In the club room they can enjoy their breakfast as well as free drinks and snacks throughout the day. However, during the Christmas season Disney’s Hotel New York introduced an option for all guests who don’t want to pay the extra surcharge for staying in one of the club’s rooms but nevertheless want to take a peek into the club room: the Empire State Club Lunch. When Two Holidays Collide

Friday, November 5th, 2010

Just two more nights before the Christmas season officially starts at Disneyland Paris. Following closely on the heels of the Halloween season that ended Monday evening the resort is racing at high speed to get the one set of decorations down while the others go up. In fact the resort actually took a head-start to redecorating and decided to go for the “when two holidays collide look” already to the extremly busy final week of the Halloween season.

Already by last weekend at least parts of the Christmas decorations had been installed at all Disney hotels but Disney’s Sequoia Lodge. In fact, Disney’s Hotel New York and the Disneyland Hotel had already their impressive christmas trees in the hotel lobbys set up – while still retaining Halloween decorations in other areas. Disney’s Sequoia Lodge for example features special Halloween decorations in black and orange complete with pumpkins jack-o-lanterns not only in its bar but also its two restaurants. (more…)

Summer Break in Manhattan

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

Sorry … that should have read: Summer Break at Manhattan’s. As in the past years the up-scale Italian restaurant Manhattan’s at Disney’s Hotel New York is closed during the summer months. So guests stating at the resort’s second highest rank hotel are left with only the Parkside Diner as dining option – a buffet location. However, Manhattan’s is used at leas as breakfast location.

The reason for the apparently already usual summer closure of Manhattan’s is not officially known. Bug there has been speculation that it is considered (price wise) more of a business restaurant and therefore it’s opening status may be connected to the booking situation at the hotel’s conference center – which is usually rather slow during the summer school breaks across Europe.

However, there is also some good news: posters in the hotels elevators announce the re-opening of Manhattan’s as full service Italian restaurant for August 31st.

Ice Skating in Summer Time

Monday, August 9th, 2010

With the installation of the artifical (=”synthetic”) ice rink on the Rockefeller Plaza in front of Disney’s Hotel New York last winter (check out our report from last October for details) everything had been set up the first time ever for a year round operation of the “Rockefeller Rink”. Gone are the noisy go-carts respectively the fun-bikes that had taken over the area in the past years. Certainly the ice rink is the aesthetically (as well as regarding the noise if compared to the go-carts) much better option (even so the wide open water surface with the detailed map of Manhattan underneath it that originally took the place of the ice rink in 1992 is still missed by long-time fans).

The only problem: with the synthetic ice rink not offering any cooling effect to those skating (since it is assembled out of special “plastic” elements) the numbers of skaters has been rather small during the hot weeks of summer. To help cool the guests down while skating (and give them more of a traditional ice skating experience) the resort has installed a large fan above the rink at the edge of the fountain that sits elevated between the rink and the central lobby building. Said fan is not only creating a pleasant draft of air but also sprays a water mist off and gives guests the impression of a cooling effect (similar misting fans are used e.g. in queue lines many parks in Florida).

Ice Skating on Rockefeller Plaza – or not?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Traditionally the center piece of Rockefeller Plaza between Lake Disney and Disney’s Hotel New York during the cold months of the year is the so called ”Rockefeller Rink” – an ice skating rink that guests enjoyed since 1992. So when the cart track (that in the recent years is the summer alternative) closed down and was taken down in early September (as reported) the work taking place behind hastily set up construction walls was certainly assumed to be the usually installation of the ice skating rink. However, that assumption turned out to be wrong, when the walls came down and the date of the official opening of the rink (last Saturday) arrived … (more…)

Helloooo… Helloooo… anyone at the Disney Hotels?

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Hotel New YorkDespite various offers (such as heavily discounted rooms for Annual Passport holders) the Disney Hotels at Disneyland Paris seem to have been hit especially hard by the current economic climate . While none of the seven Disney Hotels (including Disney’s Davy Crockett Ranch) is deserted guests at the hotels clearly get the impression that the hotels are considerable less busy. The conception is not only based on shorter lines during check-in or less busy restaurants during breakfast, but also on the cut-backs of the amenities.

Hotel Sequoia LodgeWith the exception of the Disneyland Hotel the Disney Hotels are still sticking to the limited operating hours for their pools, which continue to open only at 3.00pm. Also there are other cut-backs such as at Disney’s Sequoia Lodge where the “Ranger’s Breakfast” in the Bar area has been discontinued which normally allowed selected guests to avoid the busy restaurants. Go-Karts already closed?

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

Hotel New YorkLast week the team responsible for the operation of the various popular offers on and around Lake Disney, such as the pedal boats, water bikes and the go-karts in front of Disney’s Hotel New York started to prepare for the end of the summer season as well. As can be seen here the modular blocks used to define the actual “race track” for the go-karts were already disassembled.

Hotel New YorkExpect the cover to get off the floor soon as well to allow preparation for the traditional ice rink that will replace the go-karts as early as sometime during October most likely, considering that the cast of “Mickey’s Winter Wonderland” (set to return to the Chaparral Theater in the course of November) usually held parts of their skating rehearsals on the public ice rink during morning hours, when it is still closed to guests.

Early Morning Swimming at Disney Hotels? (updated)

Tuesday, August 4th, 2009

Disneyland HotelNo, sir – not this summer. In the recent weeks fans have heatedly debatted the decision of the management to limit operating hours of certain attractions inside the Disneyland Park, i.e. opening them late and closing them early. While the opinions of fans seem to go apart, whether this is acceptable in the current economic climate or not, general consensus seems to be that the way the operating hours are communicated (with signs at the entrance of the according attractions but not on any leaflet or centralized information board) is extremly problematic. However, cost cutting measures are also affecting the guests of the hotels – at least those that are staying in the Disney Hotels which are fighting decreased occupancy rates despite numerous deep discounts in the past months. Buffet Méridional à VolontéGuest staying at Disney’s Hotel New York, the resort’s second most expensive Disney hotel, during this summer season will be surprised to notice that both restaurants of the hotel – the Park Side Diner as well as the Manhattan’s – have been closed for the duration of the busiest months of the year! For the breakfast guests are guided twoard two large rooms of the convention center of the hotel, which is also the location for the “Radio City Buffet” that is offered in the same areas during dinner.
