More Rehabs – NOW

Saturday, April 30th, 2011

The Sleeping Beauty Castle might be most prominent refurbishment going on right now. But as already reported, there are numerous additional rehabs currently in Fantasyland and certainly the rehab of Walt’s on the Main Street. But that is not the end of the list – and certainly the rehabs are not limited to the Disneyland Park, as the scaffolding at the lake facade of Disney’s Sequoia Lodge shows. Another refurbishment is currently starting just a few meters further up on the shores of Lake Disney. As seen in the photo by InsideDLParis work has started on the light house in front of Disney’s Newport Bay Club – finally, as it has been awaited by fans for a rather long time as the state of it had been detoriating for quite a while now.

There is also a sort of a rehab going on in the Walt Disney Studios Park. As can be seen in the second photo from Friday, April 29, crews have started cleaning the tent structure roofs of Studio 2 and 3 housing Cinemagique and Animagique. While these roof structures are not as obvious as something like the light house on the shores of Lake Disney or Sleeping Beauty Castle in the Disneyland Park they are still visible from inside the Walt Disney Studios Park for all guests and need just the same attention as other buildings.

The final new refurbishment for this report is found inside the Disneyland Park once again, to be more specific inside Adventureland. Here scaffolding has gone up over the last days around Colonel Hathi’s Pizza Outpost.

Another Castle Rehab Progress Report – with a photo from TODAY

Saturday, April 30th, 2011

Picking up where we left with yesterday’s CRPR (Castle Rehab Progress Report) thanks to InsideDLParis (aka Matthew Burggraeve) we can now present you with the latest developments of the most prominent current refurbishment project at Disneyland Paris: Sleeping Beauty Castle.

As a reminder we start out with a photo taken on Wednesday, April 27th – seen on the left. It shows the castle still with all tarps up at the front facade but already with a white roof on the highest turret and the roofs completely missing on the second turret to the left of it as well as (barely visible in the photo) on the second turret on the right half of the castle if coutning up from the top of the scaffolding.

As already reported yestereday the tarps at the front facade of the castle starting coming down yesterday … revealing that also some work was done to the rockwork at the base of the castle – including the picturesque waterfall to the left of the draw bridge, which can be seen in our next photo on the left.

The third and final photo of today’s CRPR courtesy of InsideDLParis shows the castle at (roughly) 10:30 am today, Saturday April 30th. As all the tarps have come down on the front facade of the actual castle the new colors cal already be seen through the remaining scaffolding. A look at the right border of the photo shows that the printed on tarps are still up on the scaffolding covering the archway leading from the castle to the right (so behind the Castle Stage).

Also note that the roof of the top turret, that had been stripped of the old colors on Wednesday now already received it’s paint job with the new color scheme selected. A comparison of the two photos of the castle from Wednesday (April 27) and today (April 30). Shows further progress – sure the roofs of on the two turrets mentioned above are still missing. But there are now three more roofs of turrets that are all wait, that means that have been prepared to receive their new paint job: the small side turret on the highest turret as well as the next two turrets to the right from it in the photo.

While the rehab of the castle will continue for a while longer with the scaffolding at its front facade coming down guests will soon be able to get their traditional souvenir photos once again in front of a shining, good-as-new castle!

Castle Rehab – a progress report

Friday, April 29th, 2011

The castle rehab project is gathering up speed … faster and faster. Take a look at the photos accompanying this report. They were taken last weekend and still show all of the tarps up on the front facade of the castle. As of yesterday, Thursday April 28, 2011, these tarps have started coming down on the front facade of the main part of the castle.

Already gone by yesterday evening was the tarp surrounding the facade around the actual gate into the castle. I.e. we are talking about the printed on tarps as seen in the photo on the right, not the white tarps covering the arcade leading from the main body of the castle to the right (behind the Castle Stage). Also visible again was the waterfall to the left of the castle, which received a rehab as well (but certainly was still turned off as the scaffolding was still in place.

While the scaffolding was still up after the tarps came down, expect the scaffolding to follow soon. Also the entrance walkway from Central Plaza to the Dragon’s cave under the castle has been blocked with a green construction wall to park a large crane behind that is used in the current phase of the construction.

However, the tarps on the front facade weren’t the only things that came down. Also down is the golden / blue color on selected roofs of the castle’s turrets. As of Wednesday the complete roof of the highest turret was all white as it was prepped to receive its new paint job.

To see photos of the latest progress, including the revealed, rehabed waterfalls, the tarps taken down and the turret’s white roof check out the tweets by InsideDLParis (Matthew Burggraeve) or head straight to his twitpic account!

More Rehabs in Fantasyland (UPDATED!)

Friday, April 29th, 2011

It’s a non stop work in progress. When one area is done, the next one is prepared. Fantasyland (and in particular its walkways) is seeing a lot of work done in 2011 to prepare for next year’s 20th anniversary. As the repaving of the parade route in Fantasyland has been finished and work in front of the Castle stage is underway now new construction fences have gone up in front of the Fantasy Festival Stage. Repaving Continuing (updated)

Thursday, April 28th, 2011

The ground that guest stand on during their Disneyland visit is mostly forgotten or overlooked by many but it is a solid part of the story and important to make sure that the magic keeps alive, even under your feet.

It’s nice to look up and see a wonderful and colorful castle, but if the path that you walk on doesn’t look good or isn’t maintained it would take away from the full picture, breaking the illusion of the magic. To make sure guest get nothing but the best, even for their feet that are feeling the pressure of strolling hours in the park, Disney is making sure the paths and the grounds around it are in perfect condition. At this time one of these projects is taking place in Fantasyland.

Leave the castle on your rights going to the left side walking into Fantasyland guests pass the beautiful, but unfortunately underused, Castle Stage. Right in front of the Castle Stage guest could brows around it or sit on one of the many benches that used to be full with guests visiting the great shows on the castle. At this time the whole area has been blocked of with the standard green fences including with the regular “for your future enjoyment” signs. The whole are is being repaved to make the area look new and freshed up again. This is a second phase in refurbishing this area as work in and around the Castle Stage area already took place a while ago.

During the refurbishment guest will also be unable to go to the wishing well that can be found just behind the castle stage area and that connects the side of the of the castle with the left hand path way to Fantasyland. A gray fence is looking the entrance from the castle onto the wishing well area. No chance to go and make a wish at this time, however who would need to make any wish when they are in Disneyland Paris.

UPDATE:
As  a look behind the fence provided by InsideDLParis via twitpic reveals the repaving is making fast progress. Already the area between the actual stage and the Central Plaza seems to be finished. However, the bricks seem to be used not only to replace the concrete on this part of the parade route but also the floor of the former auditorium (from which the benches were removed several weeks ago).

Big Thunder Mountain Accident – the follow-up

Wednesday, April 27th, 2011

As reported earlier on Easter Monday, April 25, 2011, five guests on board of one of the trains of Big Thunder Mountain were injured. After various versions of the original accident reports with partially contradicting details it seems the French daily Le Parisien has now published what – at this time – should be considered the definitive version of the facts (even so obviously not concerning the cause for the accident).

So this is what seems to have happened:

In the tunnel housing the coasters final lift hill (“lift C”) one of the set pieces fell off the walls or the ceiling (no details have been released concerning this). The cause for this is unknown. However, it has to be considered that the tunnel housing “lift C” is also home to the “earthquake scene” of Big Thunder Mountain. Once a train rolls up the lift hill  movement of rockwork on the walls and above the guests together with lighting and sound effects is supposed to simulate an earthquake with an explosion followed by the tunnel supposedly caving in on the train, revealing a vein of gold just as the train – normally – would escape at the last second onto the final section of the coaster track.

Original reports stated that the set piece, some fake rockwork consisting (as confirmed by Thierry Bonnet, deputy prefect of Seine-et-Marne) of fiberglass and wood fell onto the train injuring five of the 25 guests on board. However, it has now been determined that set piece did not actually fall on the guests. Instead it fell onto the track in front of the train. Once the train was pulled up the lift hill it hit the fake rockwork on the track resulting it in being flung upwards and then hitting 5 of the guests on board and injured them around 2:50 pm, April 25, 2011.  (more…)

Space Rangers called (back) into Constellations

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

As reported earlier this year a metall barrier / fence was installed at the exit of Buzz Lightyear Laser Blast funneling guests into the shop Constellations. Then in the past weeks suddenly the barrier disappeared and fans rejoiced that the resort had realized that forcing guests from the ride into the frequently already overcrowded shop was a far from perfect idea. However, this reaction came to early. (more…)

Luxury Dining Behind Scaffolding

Tuesday, April 26th, 2011

As the VIPs and press invited for the official kick-off of this year’s Magical Moments Festival have gone for some time the resort continues its program of major rehabs at full force. The latest addition to the rehab list has seen extensive scaffolding going up around the complete facade of “Walt’s – An American Restaurant” on Main Street U.S.A.

As can be seen in the photo on the right currently the scaffolding is only hidden behind a white tarp, but based on past experiences with similar rehab projects on facades of the Main Street buildings a painted / printed tarp should be going up soon so better to hide the work / less impacting the photos taken by guests on the Main Street. You may want to jump directly to our follow-up coverage with updated details correcting some of the early reports and providing more in depths information!

Around 3 pm on Easter Monday, April 25, 2011 five guests were injured riding the Big Thunder Mountain rollercoaster in Frontierland of Disneyland Paris. According to the French paper Le Parisien the guests on board of one of the main trains (i.e. coaster trains) were hit by some fake rock work that fell down on them. The fake rock was made out of resin. (see updates 1 & 2) According to first reports the train at that time was located on the final lift hill of the attraction (“lift C”). This lift hill is inside a tunnel in which movement of rockwork on the walls and above the guests together with lighting and sound effects is supposed to simulate an earthquake with an explosion followed by the tunnel supposedly caving in on the train which – normally – would escape at the last second onto the final section of the coaster track.

While four of the five injured guests on board of the train were able to continue their day inside Disneyland after being treated on-site by the emergency personnel the fifth guests – a 40 year old French men according to Le Parisien – had to be moved to the hospital Beaujon in Clichy-sur-Seine (Hauts-de-Seine) due to head injuries. According to a statement by a state official provided to Reuters the injury of this fifth guests is considered serious. According to Le Parisien the family of the seriously injured guest will be hosted by the resort for the time he is in the hospital. (more…)

Goodbye Nescafé – Hello Segafredo

Monday, April 25th, 2011

With April 12 not only did the resort get another year older – also, as usual, it was time for some sponsors’ contracts to be renewed or them being replaced. This year we can note the addition of MasterCard that already late last yeard had the replaced VISA as the official credit card of the resort (which therefore hadn’t been listed as a sponsor lately). However, there are also exits without replacement: Dole (who most recently sponsored the Blue Lagoon and the Café de la Brousse (both in Adventureland) has been scrapped off the list. Also gone are Ford (which had replaced Opel / Vauxhall as the resort’s official car sponsor) and Hasbro as well as IBM and Kellog’s.

Where still 15 sponsors were listed on the park maps at the beginning of the year now only 11 are left. This is certainly also reflected on the sign announcing sponsors on the walls of the City Hall. However, one important change among the sponsors and partners is only half-way reflected in these two lists. There is a new addition we haven’t mentioned so far: Segafredo Zanetti, an Italian coffee brand! (more…)
