Disney’s latest Blockbuster: the Annual Passport

Friday, March 25th, 2011

Since its opening 9 years ago the Walt Disney Studios Park was lacking its own Annual Passport office. Instead guests were asked to obtain their Annual Passports at the central office located in the Disneyland Park. With the ongoing promotions of the APs in the last two to three years lines there have become more frequent and longer.

In light of these longer lines at the AP office in the Disneyland Park and the larger crowds attracted to  the Walt Disney Studios the second gate of the resort received its own AP office in time for the christmas season 2010. It is located in the overflow room of the Disney Blockbuster Café on the Backlot.

Café des Cascadeurs Expansion

Tuesday, August 31st, 2010

Café des Cascadeurs – the sole table service restaurant of the Walt Disney Studios Park, offering a family friendly menu (burgers, hot dogs etc.) in a real historic American diner making it (as is proudly proclaimed) the “oldest restaurant of all Disney parks” – regularly has lines of eager diners waiting for a seat to become available. During the warmer months of the year additional seating on a terrace (which was added after the location proved popular with guests) adds to the capacity but the rest of the year the wait at the restaurant (which does not accept any reservations) can be rather long during the lunch hours. Considering this Imagineering paid a special visit to the restaurant the past Monday to discuss on-site the concepts for an expansion… (more…)

Goofy & Pooh Forgotten?

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

Yesterday we reported about the return of the (tweaked) Enchanted Fireworks and the (also tweaked) Disney’s Fantillusion parade for the summer season. However, not every entertainment offering from the past year has made its comeback. In particular smaller offerings such as “Good Morning Studios” and the “Toon Train” in the Studios are gone (as well as the “High School Musical” performance) – without replacement, even so “Stitch or friends” are supposed to pose for photos and sign autographs on the Place des Stars for 3 1/2 hours each afternoon adding to the lineup of characters usually found in Toon Plaza, on the Front Lot and at the Monsters. Inc. photo backdrop. Interestingly the visits of Jack Sparrow to the pirates’ section of the Disney Blockbuster Cafe have been stopped as well.  The picture at the Disneyland Park is slightly different though… (more…)

Cafe des Cascadeurs upgraded

Thursday, July 1st, 2010

The Cafe des Cascadeurs was always a popular location for a small snack in the WDS offering mostly hot dogs and nachos in particular among the more regular guests of the park. Sure it is hidden in a corner behind the back of Armageddon. But that location adds to its relaxed atmosphere, in particular during the summer months, when the restaurant’s terrace offers the opportunity to enjoy the fast food “al fresco”. Also the limited indoor and outdoor seating wouldn’t really be suited to the large amount of guests that a more central location would attract. But, the crowds are sure to grow now …

Controlling the Beat

Monday, January 11th, 2010

The Rock’n'Rollercoaster starring Aerosmith underwent a lengthy rehab last fall. The result? Guests are raving again about the light effects synchronized to the soundtrack of the coaster cutting through the thick smoke which once again fills the whole soundstage housing the coaster. In other words: the rehab brought the coaster back to its original standards.

But there are additional, more subtle improvements such as a retouched paint job for the waiting areas (e.g. on the wall guests are facing in the long corridor after the pre-show) - plus one huge improvement for the cast members working at the attraction. (more…)

Out with Old, In with the New

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

New Year’s is still a far thought for most alas the Walt Disney Studios Park has already replaced some of its older decorations with new material in a move to refresh the look for return guests and avoid a dated impression due to the various posters for long gone movies. Which ones? This time we are talking about selected large oversized movie posters on the two long sides of Studio 1 as well as selected posters on the lighting and sound poles lining the parade route on Production Courtyard and in the Backlot. Disney Blockbuster Café – Original or Not?

Monday, October 19th, 2009

Blockbuster Cafe - Pirates AreaIt has been a while since we were able to report progress in the transformation of the former “Backlot Express” restaurant in the Walt Disney Studios to its new “Disney Blockbuster Café” incarnation – however, at the last update the interior (and exterior) seemed pretty much finished with only the display cases in both the Pirates of the Caribbean section and the (on the majority of days closed) expansion room of the High School Musical area still empty. However, finally these display cases have been outfitted with content as well. (more…)

Disney Blockbuster Café – Original HSM props?

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

Blockbuster Cafe - High School Musical AreaEven so a few additional posters and banners were added in the past weeks the decoration based on the High School Musical franchise in the entrance area, the counter area as well as the raised seating area to the righ of the entrance seemed mostly finished for a while in the Disney Blockbuster Café (with the exception of a few overhead banners that were added lately) while work concentrated on the Pirates of the Caribbean themed room, that opened only last week.

However, a look into the second HSM themed room the past weekend revealed that there might be more coming. This second room can be accessed from the raised seating area only and is actualy the former covered terrace that was enclosed during the first winter of the Walt Disney Studios to increase the restaurant’s capacity for the colder months of the year. While posters showing off the cast of the HSM 3 were added several weeks ago already, now two large glass display cases were placed along the rear wall (just as in the Pirates themed room). So it seems a good guess that some original props from the movies might be added here sometime soon. (more…)

Disney Blockbuster Café – the cool pirates hang-out

Monday, August 24th, 2009

Blockbuster Cafe - Pirates AreaThe Disney Blockbuster Café officially opened its Pirates of the Caribbean themed area (to the left of the main serving area) the past week. To celebrate this occasion the printed entertainment guide for the two theme parks also got updated with a notice that the “newest, coolest place to eat” has replaced the former Backlot Express Restaurant (since the entertainment Blockbuster Cafe - Pirates Areaguide is printed weekly, while the main guide will only be re-printed in early November and will still list the old restaurant till then).

As the exterior of the building remained unchanged with the exceptionBlockbuster Cafe - Pirates Area of the new marquee featuring the new name above the main entrance the only indicator that there might be something related to the Pirates of the Caribbean movies to be found inside are the new large movie posters advertising the franchise behind the first outdoor seating area, which replaced current posters for the latest movies of Walt Disney Pictures. While Blockbuster Cafe - Pirates Areaa large window front facing toward Armageddon and the main road looks into the Pirates themed room it is hard to difficult to see any details from outside, as the windows are not only partially blocked by one of the major themeing elements, but also recieved a blue tinting to give the impression eternal moonlight inside…

But once a guest leaves the High School Musical themed entrance and (more…)

Pirates and Higschool Kids

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

… are supposed to be right at home at the Disney Blockbuster Café in the Walt Disney Studios Park once the transformation of the former “Backlot Express Restaurant” is finished. In another visible progress the “Café” signage part of the restaurant’s name was added to the facade above the main entrance in the past days. As in the past, while “Disney Blockbuster” is painted directly on the wall, the “Café” element is actually a 3D-element that (supposedly) should be illuminated at night. But what about the interior?
