New temporary facade for Walt’s

Saturday, May 14th, 2011

20110514-002528.jpg
20110514-002547.jpgAs reported the extensive refurbishment of the exterior facade of Walt’s on the Main Streeted started about three weeks ago – i.e. the facade disappeared behind Scaffolding reaching all the way up to the highest point of the roofline. While a temporary sign was added above the entrance to make sure guests are aware, that the restaurant remains open for business, it took a bit longer to cover the white tarps with tarps showing a printed replica of the original building’s facade.

However, on May 13, 2011 they finally were installed, making the whole refurbishment project less obvious and intrusive for guests walking down Main Street U.S.A. The painted tarps have become a trademark feature of Disneyland Paris which is in the meantime also emulated in the US Disney resorts. Their effect of reducing the intrusion of the rehabs into the themed environment is particularly important in years like 2011 when the number and the scope of rehabs exceeds the usual amount by far – in this case due to the preparation for next year’s anniversary.

BIG and small (UPDATED)

Friday, May 13th, 2011

20110512-223622.jpgEven so our coverage of the various refurbishment projects currently taking place at the resort in preparation for next year’s 20th anniversary mostly concentrates on the big, high-profile projects (e.g. the current rehab of Orbitron) there are numerous small regurbishments going-on across the resort at any given time. For example right now one of the small bridges of the meandering paths connecting the various outdoor areas of the Cafe de la Brousse in Adventureland has been closed off for one of the smaller refurbishment projects.

UPDATE:
20110514-000052.jpgIt is as if the small rehab next to the Cafe de la Brousse was set up as a perfect example for us to demonstrate the small & swift rehabs that pop up in the resort and are finished just as fast as they appeared. Where Thursday the rehab was executed the work was already finished and the two pieces of construction fence blocking the access had disappeared by Friday – as seen in the new photo by InsideDLParis.

Good morning … with an update from the Earl

Friday, May 13th, 2011

20110512-223455.jpg

Another morning – another quick update from the construction of the first Earl of Sandwich restaurant in continental Europe (check out yesterday’s update for the background why it is only the first in continental Europe). Today InsideDLParis shows us some new progress on the decorative turret / “hat” element sitting on top of the building’s roof at it’s front corner. The steel skeleton of the two top levels of the element (looking a bit like the structure of a layered / multi-level cake) has now been covered receiving it’s finalized look (judged based on the concept artwork), while the third and lowest level still shows the bare steel skeleton.

Gibson Guitars has arrived

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

20110511-225924.jpg

Gibson Guitars is already one (of the dwindling numbers) of the official sponsors of Disneyland Paris – since 2010. But only now (that is even several weeks after April 12 – which usually is the big day of change for the sponsor list) it has also officially arrived as name sponsor for one of the resort’s attractions.

Gibson Guitars fittingly selected the Rock’n'Roller Coaster starring Aerosmith in the Walt Disney Studios. An according logo with the French only tag line “présenté par” was added to the facade recently and can be seen in the above photo.

News from the Earl (UPDATED)

Thursday, May 12th, 2011

20110511-225817.jpg

Following our report from Tuesday here is already another update of the construction at the first European first Earl of Sandwich restaurant in continental Europe - thanks to InsideDLParis. Taken on Wednesday from the elevated position (at the Café Mickey) it becomes visible that the construction crews are already preparing the floor surrounding the future restaurant. While the resort decided to switch from concrete floor to pavements laid of stones inside Fantasyland for the parade route, the floor in Disney Village is kept a concrete floor. The design of the concrete floor in front of the Earl of Sandwich continues the patterns already in place for the surrounding concrete floor of the Disney Village.

In addition to the work on the flooring the photo also shows, that the staircase leading up to the terrace in front of the facade facing toward Lake Disney has yet to be installed. Only the massive concrete base for the upper part is already in place. It can be seen at the far end of the facade. Once the staircase is installed someone at the vintage point from which this photo was taken would look right onto the staircase.

UPDATE:
As Park Paradise pointed out in its comment the upcoming Earl of Sandwich is NOT the first Earl of Sandwich restaurant in Europe. The chain opened a restaurant in London, near St. Paul’s, on April 18, 2011 – as detailed on it’s official UK website - which did beat the location in Disney Village by a month and a half (based on the currently scheduled opening). However, the official French website still calls the Disney Village location the chain’s first European restaurant (“Earl of Sandwich ouvre sa première Sandwicherie haut de gamme en Europe” which translates as “Earl off Sandwich opens its first top-of-the-range Sandwicherie in Europe”). This should more correctly now read “first … in continental Europe”.

From a Toad to a Hatter

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

20110511-001112.jpg

Time for a look at the other big rehab going on in Fantasyland besides the one of the exterior of the Old Mill. This time InsideDLParis provides us with a look over the green construction fence that blocks of the wide area in front of the Toad Hall Restaurant (still open, accessible via a small walkway leading up onto its terrace next to Peter Pan’s Flight) and the Fantasy Festival Stage / Fantasyland Station (also still open). As can be seen the original floor has been taken out and new stones will be laid down very soon. To the right of the photo the new pavement stones have already been laid.

20110511-001154.jpgUnfortunately a third, unplanned refurbishment has sprung up in Fantasyland as well: today the Unbirthday Party tee table decoration that had been set up at the photo location in front of Alice’s Curious Labyrinth was gone. While the throne (here since 1992) and Mad Hatter’s seat (complete with the hat, both installed only this year for Disney’s Magical Moments Festival) remained, the table with its crazy decorations for the Unbirthday Tea Party is gone. If past experience with Aladdin’s Magical Lamp at another new photo location created for the festival is any indicator most probably the table respectively the decorations on it did not withstand the wear and tear imposed by some guests…

Rehabs fly into Discoveryland (UPDATED)

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

20110511-000954.jpg
20110511-000926.jpgThe rehabs in preparation of next year’s 20th anniversary celebration have (finally) touched down in Discoveryland as well. Green construction fence has sprung up all around the Orbitron – the center piece of the large plaza in front of Space Mountain: Mission 2. Orbitron is not only the alternative to Dumbo for a bit more adventurous guests (as it flies higher and turns much faster) but also adds kinetic energy to the front half of Discoveryland with its lgeaming and turning elements. However, guests will have to live without this effect and the attraction for quite a while. Currently the rehab is scheduled to last (at least) till the end of June. If the major rehabs of Orbitron in the past are any indicators the center piece of Orbitron, which still stretches high above the construction fence, can be expected to be taken down soon.

As a side note: surprisingly a themed construction notice has been put up on the construction fence for Orbitron, featuring the popular poster art as seen in the tunnels under the Main Street Station (and on the photo above by InsideDLParis).

UPDATE:
Yesterday we said that the dismantling of the ride’s centerpiece could be expected soon … only shortly after the post was published InsideDLParis reported that overnight that exact dismantling process had started and first elements had been taken down overnight.

Earl of Sandwich – all up

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

20110509-231543.jpg

Finally once again some visible progress at the outside of the future Earl of Sandwich restaurant. Yesterday, Monday May 9, 2011, the light-up letters “Earl of Sandwich” appeared in the glass facade facing toward Lake Disney.

There is more work to be done to the exterior of the restaurant as well – so there should be more visible progress in the next days. For example the low row of covered panels between the ground floor windows and the first floor windows is still to be finished. Furthermore, the roof still sports a construction railing just as the outdoor terrace to the left of the main building in the photo above – note that the outdoor terrace is actually on the level of the first floor, with the stairs leading up outside the the building right in front of it.

The photo by InsideDLParis also shows that the beige construction fence blocking off the view onto the bridge across the small side arm of Lake Disney were taken down. The bride is still blocked off … but this should change soon, after all Disneyland Paris on it’s official twitter account already confirmed June 1st as the grand opening date for the Earl of Sandwich.

We're hard at work inside the Earl of Sandwich restauran... on TwitpicWith the same tweet the resort also shared a photo taken inside the restaurant and even allowed to put it on other websites via twitpic – so here it is! The photo was tweeted past Friday, May 6, 2011 but it is not stated when it was taken, It shows still some work to do as the stairs leading up to the first floor are still missing any railing. However, the fake library front covering the large backwall of the restaurant looks nearly finished.

20110509-233713.jpgAs the Earl of Sandwich come June 1st should look all new and shiny the Rainforest Cafe next door is trying to improve its exterior at least a little bit. After getting the upper (unthemed) part of its facade facing toward Lake Disney freshly painted in a light blue now the rockwork of the crocodile pool next to the restaurant’s main entrance got a fresh coat of paint (as can be seen in the photo on the left). Unfortunately the fake rockwork covering the lower level of the building now looks even more washed out…

Painting in The National Parks

Monday, May 9th, 2011

20110508-200353.jpg

In the wake of the interior rehabs at Disney’s Sequoia Lodge (so far mostly in the lodges out in the wide gardens behind the main building) a rehab of the main building’s facade facing toward Lake Disney started in late April (as reported). Work is progressing now as can be seen in this photo taken on May 8, 2011, by InsideDLParis.

Interestingly so far the pain crews seem to use two different colors, a darker one closer to the ground a lighter one further up (the very light third “color” seen in some parts of the facade on this photo should not be any chosen color but just the look of the wooden facade after preparation and prior to applying the new paints.

Adventureland getting more rehabs

Monday, May 9th, 2011

20110508-102217.jpg

The refurbishment projects continue to pop up all over the lands of the Disneyland Park. And while the Pinocchio dark ride reopened this weekend from its rehab another attraction in the neighboring Adventureland just got closed for a rehab: La Cabe des Robinson – the tree house of the Robinson Family (inspired by the classic live-action Disney movie). This walk-through attraction normally not only allows guests a close up look at the living quarters which the Robinson Family set up when they got marooned on a deserted island but also offers great views all over Adventureland. During the rehab guests can still enjoy similar views from the highest points of Adventureland Island.

20110508-102249.jpgAnother refurbishment project in Adventureland also seems to be in the early preparation phase: the replacement of Captain Hook’s Galley that feel into serious disrepair over the last years. The close up of the galley provided by InsideDLParis (and seen on the left) not only shows the sorry state of the ship (with elements nearly falling off allowing guests to look at the core structure not supposed to be visible) but also the water level of the lagoon. As can be seen the water level is way lower than it normally should be, exposing the fundament the ship sits on.

The reduced water level is also clearly discernible at the rock in the middle of the lagoon seen in the photo below. The dark part of the rock usually is above the water line, while the lighter colored section usually is below the water line. As the replacing of the galley has been officially announced (and should already be underway according to the first schedules mentioned by the resort) this reduction in the lagoon’s water level should be the first visible preparation of this process.
