The central project of 2011 is the complete rehab of the Sleeping Beauty Castle as the center piece of the Disneyland Park and the icon of the whole resort … and the project seems to progress nicely. As reported prior the scaffolding reacing up to half the height of the castle has been covered with a printed on canvas to reduce the visual impact.
This printed on canvas also stretches around to the side so that any photos taken of the Castle Stage do not show the simple white planes originally in place. However, these white planes are still used to cover the scaffolding hiding the castle wall stretching to the far right away from the castle (as can be seen in the photo on the left).
Workers can be seen all over the construction site – and their progress is just as well visible in some places. For example the walls and railing along the walkway down from the arcade, across the moat to the Castle Stage are already nearly completely done.
This has the workers allowed to move on to the “backside” of the castle as well, i.e. the facade facing toward Fantasyland. Scaffolding has been errected covering the main structure of the castle up to half of its height as well as both castle arcades on the left and the right (these up to their full height). However, at least so far the scaffolding is still hidden behind plain white planes – no printed canvas here.
A closer look behind the planes in front of the scaffolding not only allows a close-up of the cleaning, restoration and repainting process but also reveals a sign showing off the color scheme of the castle – most probably has a help / reminder for the painting crew.
As promised the resort is trying to limit the impact of this major rehab on guests as far as possible. Besides the printed canvas facing toward the Main Street, U.S.A. -to retain (as good as possible) the most popular iconic photo shot for guests – this also means that guests can still enter the castle and the two shops located here.
From the Central Plaza access to the castle is possible through the main gate (as usually), however, from Fantasyland access is limited. No longer is it possible to walk straight through the castle coming from the Central Plaza exiting on the opposite site down the two stairways into the courtyard.
The scaffolding on the backside of the castle blocks this exit. Instead guests have to walk through the arcades to the left or right and enter the courtyard from these, i.e. at the far right respectively left side. When walking through the arcades planes are blocking the view on both sides as can be seen in the photo on the right.
