There is one more part to discover in Toy Story Playland, the area beyond Rex (whom we visited earlier today) further down the main walkway. The walkway leads guests further into the woods with the queue area for RC Racer on the left, shortly before the walkway makes a bend to the right the colorful plastic Monkey of the US childrens’ game “Barrel of Monkeys” have formed one of their chains high up above, across the wide walkway from one Tinker Toy structure to another. Some of the Monkeys are carrying scrabble letters dangling from their feet…
If seen from inside the Toy Story Playland walking toward the back of the area (as we do on our tour) the letters spell out Goodbye. However, for those that are walking along in the opposite direction they spell out “Welcome”. Certainly we have turned around for you to show you the view that guests will have of the land when entering Toy Story Playland from the back of the land, where they are welcomed by the Monkeys.
In this shot take a closer look at Tinker Toy Structure on the right side of the walkway functioning as a light (and sound) column. Do you notice anything? The Tinker Toys have been assembled particularly to recreate the shape of a human! Guests taking a closer look at some of the other Tonker Toy structures along the paths may find more funily familar feeling shapes.
But let’s continue further down the walkway. A few steps after passing under the Monkeys chain the walkway turns right and into a huge blue “Barrel of Monkeys”. As it misses its bottom the huge oversized plastic barrel functions as the entrance / exit tunnel at this rear end of the Toy Story Playland. Before walking through the tunnel so we leave the main walkway and follow the smaller
paths between the K’NEX railings toward the top lid of the Barrel of Monkeys that stands nearly half burried in the ground next to the barrel / tunnel.
Originally only supposed to be a themeing element further on during the creation of the Toy Story Playland it was decided to add a small shop (alas, no toilets – an omission many fans had discussed when the plans for the area leaked).
The shop is now placed inside the top lid, the lower section of which can move up into the top of the barrel to open the store entrance, nearly as wide as the whole lid. However, thanks to being themed as regular part of the barrel’s lid the whole set-up does not look out of place if the shop may be closed at times.
While the shop was behind the rest of the land construction wise, some elements of the decoration and the display system were already in place at the end of the past week. The interior elements, including its shelfs, look as if constructed out of Tinker Toys and building blocks. While the future cashier area uses large brightly colored blocks, there are smaller supposed to be wooden looking blocks lining the walls right on the floor. These smaller blocks sport various letters as well as the outlines of the famous stars
of the Toy Story movie series.
And with that detail it is time to return to actual barrel and the exit of the Toy Story Playland. But wait – what beckons beyond the Barrel of Monkeys … to see it … come back tomorrow (Saturday)!
