Update from the Army Men – plus: an ice cream scoop

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

jornjokker has provided fans of Disneyland Paris with two interesting updates in the past couple of days on Twitter - in particular regarding the upcoming Toy Story Playland as he managed to grab a photo of the Army Men Parachute Drop with the future parachutes pulled up to the top of the ride during some test operation. The photo on twitpic in particular shows that the seats have been attached to the cables under the frame work for the future parachute-like covers.

Differing from the similar Jumpin’ Jellyfish ride in Disney’s California Adventure in Anaheim the future ride at WDS’ Toy Story Playland consists of only one instead of two towers with the tower only having 5 instead of 6 parachutes attached. However, while each parachute provides only two seats in DCA (bringing the total capacity per tower to 12 and therefore for the whole ride to 24) the parachutes of the Army Men Parachute Drop feature a different, more substantial seating construction providing 6 seats per parachute (two rows back to back, with each row offering three separate seats next to each other), bringing the total capacity of the tower to 30 36 seats (6 12 more than the combined seats on both towers at DCA). This also explains the much more burly, massiv impression the actual tower and in particular the construction on top of it at WDS has compared to DCA’s towers. (more…)

Twinkle, twinkle little … window?!

Tuesday, April 20th, 2010

Earlier this spring the various decorations added to the Sleeping Beauty Castle (Le Château de la Belle au Bois Dormant) at the heart of the Disneyland Park for the duration of “Mickey’s Magical Party” last year were removed. Finally the castle stands on its own again as envisioned by the Imagineers showing its clear lines and simple, elegant beauty that has enchanted guests since 1992.

In particular the large oval display three dimensional, cartoonish colored display of Mickey, Donald, Goofy and Pluto leaning out of an golden, oval frame with a blue starlight background throning right above main gate of the castle clashed with the simple design and the coordinated colors of the castle ensemble. After much criticism among fans for the whole 0f 2009 its removal was greeted with much relief and applaus. However, so far this is all old news … but with its removal came another surprise… (more…)

Adventureland Bridge becomes adventurous – again

Monday, April 19th, 2010

After the summer season 2009 the wooden bridge leading from Adventure Isle next to the Pirates’ playground toward the mainland between the Adventureland Bazar and the Adventureland section of the Au Chalet de la Marionnette restaurant received a new (second) floor. Instead of the themed rough wood now well burnished wood covered the floor. As reported the effect of the cheap makeover for the bridge made it stand out in the themed Adventureland. Unfortunately the work wasn’t even very effective as far as making the bridge safer for guests – at least not after the first winter season for the new flooring. (more…)

Princess Tiana Ball

Friday, April 16th, 2010

Yesterday Disney’s The Princess and the Frog finally arrived on DVD and BluRay in German shops. In each jewel case eager buyers of Disney’s latest animated feature will find a leaflet advertising the New Generation Festival at Disneyland Paris. Certainly it is not called “New Generation Festival” here. Instead the official name of the festival for the German market is used: New Stars Festival – which funnily is English as well. On the back side of the leaflet however it gets really interesting… (more…)

The New Generation Festival in Fantasia Gardens

Friday, April 16th, 2010

The Fantasia Gardens in front of the Disneyland Hotel offers a pleasant relaxed atmosphere for a break during the day and certainly some of the quintessential photo opportunities for first time guests on their way into the Disneyland Park. As it is tradition for several years now the lampposts in the gardens have been adorned with new banners announcing this year’s festival – the New Generation Festival. (more…)

Snacking & Dining – the latest changes

Friday, April 16th, 2010

Both theme parks at Disneyland Paris offer a wide range of dining and snacking options. Over the last 2 years the resort also has pushed once again to diversify the offerings in the various locatios more, especially in regard to the counter service locations. With the latest move to adjust the restaurant offerings in the Disneyland Park the former counter service location “Buzz Lightyear’s Pizza Planet” in the back of Discoveryland (to the right of the Imagination Institute of “Honey, I Shrunk The Audience”) has been transformed into a buffet offering. Buffet offerings have proved inxcreasingly popular at Disneyland Park. This newest buffet location according to its signage placed in the walkway out front offers salads, pizza, pastam desserts and (cold) drinks priced at EUR 6,95 for children respectively 14,95 for adults. PixieDust.be has a first photo also of the interior which seemns to have seen only slightl modifications to the counter area (which btw was created out of moveable segments in the first place).

More changes to the snacking & dining options of the resort can be found in the Walt Disney Studios … (more…)

Scaffolding – Disney Style

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

Being open to guests 365 days per year means that all renovation, rehab and construction projects in Disneyland Paris have to be conducted in full view of the guests. In particular a highly themed environment such as in a Disney resort certainly is easily interrupted by the large scaffoldings necessary for some of the work, say for example to keep structures such as the detailed facades of the buildings along the Main Street, U.S.A. in the Disneyland Park up to the top notch quality standards of a Disney park. Therefore, several years ago Disneyland Paris began to hide the scaffoldings at building facades during rehabs not behind plain white or uni-colored tarps but huge oversized screen like tarps featuring detailed near-photo quality drawings / replicas of the facades hidden behind the scaffolding. More New Generation Festival Decorations

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

We have already talked about the rather subtle decorations for the New Generation Festival that have been carefully blended into the theme of the Main Street, U.S.A. However, not every decoration is that subtle. Case in point: the decorations set up at selected entrances of The Disney Store in the Disney Village, the Emporium on the Main Street in the Disneyland Park and the Studio Store in the Walt Disney Studios. New Generation Heroes Want you to Read Books

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

The new Disney heroes generation is concerned with the youth of today. They are concerned that youngsters aren’t reading enough! To try and convince the children books are a good alternative to the new generation of video game entertainment they have agreed to put up their images to try and convince kids to get reading again.

What better way to start enjoying the power of the word and strengthen childrens’ imagination than with a good Disney story?

A Main Street with Character

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

April 2010 has arrived and with it the “New Generation Festival” … and with the latter: new decorations in the Disneyland Park. However, this year for the first time since 2007 the castle is not decorated for the latest year-long celebration – the Main Street, U.S.A. on the other hand – there are new decorations.

Gone are the oversized light poles along the Main Street, U.S.A., which were originally created especially for the Christmas Season as replacement for the “Lights of Winter Arches” (which didn’t allow the latest parade floats to pass through respectively the Fantillusion floats to perform their transformation at night) but then kept throughout the year during the 15th anniversary celebrations, before being pruned in number for the 2008 summer season. And gone with the huge whites poles are also the oversized posters annuncing the latest celebratiion disrupting the theme and the size ratios of the Main Street. So what are the new decorations? Well the photos have given it away …
