Slow Progress

In the years 2001, 2002 and 2003 the amount of actualy realized construction projects at the Disney Village was rather small, even so the transformation of the Rock'n'Roll America into the King Ludwig's Castle certainly influenced the look of the Village in a major way - just as the change of the LA Bar and Grill into the Cafe Mickey, but the later one was not connected to any major construction work.

Die Jahre 2001, 2002 und 2003 sahen relativ wenig Bauprojekte im Disney Village, auch wenn die Verwandlung des Rock'n'Roll America in King Ludwig's Castle das Aussehen des Village wesentlich veränderte - ebenso wie die Verwandlung des LA Bar and Grill in das Cafe Mickey, die allerdings ohne größere Außenbauarbeiten durchgeführt wurde.


In May 2001 Gaumont officially received the building permit for an IMAX-cinema as expansion of it's cinema complex at the Village.	Im May 2001 erhielt Gaumont offiziell die Baugenehmigung für ein IMAX-Theater als Erweiterung des Multiplex im Village.	It is supposed to be constructed halfway behind the current Gaumont cinemas.	Es soll halb hinter den gegenwärtigen Gebäuden der Gaumont Kinos entstehen.

Work has begun inside the closed Annette's Diner. Seen here are the first new steel-columns added for the second level that is constructed inside the building. At the same time the ground floor is refurbished too.	Die Arbeiten im Inneren von Annette's Diner haben begonnen - zu sehen ist hier eine der ersten neuen Stahlstützen für die zweite Etage, die eingezogen wird. Außerdem wird auch die "Hauptebene" renoviert.


January the 6th will see the reopening of Annette's Diner one of the most popular restaurants of the Disney Village.	Am 6. Januar wird endlich Annette's Diner, eines der beliebtesten Restaurants des Disney Village, wieder eröffnet.	The newly added second level finally increases capacity and should reduce the long lines which formed every evening.	Mit der neuen zweiten Ebene wurde die Kapazität deutlich erhöht und die allabendlichen Schlangen sollten deutlich kürzer werden.

On the 2nd of October 2002 the resort, König Ludwig Bier (King Ludwig Beer as sponsor) and Groupe Flo (as operating company) announced that a new restaurant will take the place of the Rock'n'Roll America.	Am 2. Oktober 2002 gaben das Resort, König Ludwig Bier (als Sponsor) und Groupe Flo (als Betreiber) bekannt, dass ein neues Restaurant das Rock'n'Roll America ersetzen wird.	It will feature the look and style of a bavarian castle designed by Imagineers based on elements of the Castle Neuschwanstein.	Innen und Außen wird das von Imagineers entworfene Restaurant einem bayerischen Schloss ähneln, wobei einige Elemente dem berühmten Schloss Neuschwanstein entlehnt sind.

280 patrons will find room in the interior based on the mirror rooms of castle Neuschwanstein.	280 Gäste können in den an den Spiegelsaal von Neuschwanstein angelehnten Räumlichkeiten Platz finden.	The offers mostly will consist of German specialties and certainly German beer of the sponsoring company.	Angeboten werden hauptsächlich deutsche Spezialitäten und natürlich deutsches Bier des Sponsors.

The three and a half month since the closure of Rock'n'Roll America have been used to take down all the structures inside the building and the themeing on the outside - also room for what could be large new windows has been made in the facade.	Die drei-einhalb Mnate seit der Schließung des Rock'n'Roll America wurden gebraucht, um das Gebäude zu entkernen, das Themeing der Außenfassade zu entfernen - sowie Durchbrüche zu machen, die für große Fenster gedacht sein könnten.

A comparison of this photo with the one taken a week earlier reveals, that the last themeing element (the stamp-neon-lights) has been taken down and some steel structure seems to go into the spaces we thought were ment for windows. Also a small wall has gone up on the roof just at the corner.	Ein Vergleich mit dem Photo der Vorwoche zeigt, dass das letzte Themeing-Element entfernt wurde (der Briefmarken-Stempel aus Neonröhren) und scheinbar eine Stahlkonstruktion an den Öffnungen angebaut wird, von denen wir dachten, sie seien für Fenster vorgesehen. Außerdem wurde eine kleine Mauer direkt an der Kante des Daches aufgesetzt.


In just two days a steel skeleton rose up in front of the "windows" - a comparison with the sketches of the final design of the restaurant implies ...	In nur zwei Tagen wuchs dieses Stahlskelett vor den "Fenstern" in die Höhe - ein Vergleich mit den Skizzen der Fassade legt dabei nahe...	... that this is the basic structure for the part of the front of the building that stretches out into the walkway and is the new main entrance.	... dass es sich dabei um die Grundstruktur des Teiles des Gebäudes handelt, der sich ind den Hauptweg hineinstreckt und den Haupteingang darstellt.


Not even a week has gone by but the six-sided expansion of the building has made huge progress - it even got a roof already!	In nicht einmal einer Woche hat die sechs-seitige Erweiterung des Gebäudes große Fortschritte gemacht, selbst ein Dach gibt es schon!	But mroe interesting should be that it looks as if the "tower" will have two acessible levels - maybe with an extra rooms for small groups on the second.	Interessanter aber ist, dass der "Turm" scheinbar zwei zugängliche Ebenen haben wird mit eventuell einem Raum für kleine Gruppen auf der zweiten Ebene.

Looking into the building through the opening on the second floor one can see work going on for what looks like wooden structures for extra walls to part the space.	Ein Blick in das Innere des Gebäudes durch die Öffnung im oberen Stockwerk zeigt, dass hier Holzstrukturen eingezogen werden, die eventuell als Wände den Raum unterteilen könnten.


The work has made huge progress in a bit more than a week - now the new expansion of the building already has it's walls!	In etwas mehr als einer Woche haben die Arbeiten große Fortschritte gemacht - so hat die Erweiterung nun schon Wände!	What seems to become windows (and doors on ground floor) is still just a set of rectangular holes so...	Doch die zukünftigen Fenster (und Türen im Erdgeschoss) sind bisher nur rechteckige Aussparungen...	... but a closer look reveals that some forms are already in the openings, which could become the actual windows later.	Ein näherer Blick zeigt allerdings schon Formen in den Aussparungen, die die späteren Fenster erkennen lassen.


Exact one week later the windows on the upper floor got their final shape - and we can confirm that the frames seen in the rectangular openings last week were the forms for the windows.	Genau eine Woche später haben die Fenster im oberen Stockwerk ihre endgültige Form und wir wissen nun, dass die Rahmen in den Aussparungen letzte Wochen die Fensterformen darstellten.


How much sense does it make to advertise the opening on the construction fence in Germany ONLY? Translation: Soon opening in the Disney Village: a traditional German restaurant!		Macht es wirklich Sinn, die Eröffnung dieses "traditionellen, deutschen Restaurants" am Bauzaun im Disney Village ausschließlich in Deutsch mit diesem Schild zu bewerben? Ermuntert das zum Wiederholungsbesuch?

Below the set of three windows found on two sides of the expansion a little fake balcony has been added.	Unter dem 3er-Fenster, das auf zwei Seiten des Anbaus zu finden ist, wurde ein kleiner "Balkon" angesetzt.	Also note that only a bit less than four months before the opening the construction fence got themed.	Knappe vier Monate vor der Eröffnung wurde nun der Bauzaun minimal thematisch gestaltet.

This shows the gap between King Ludwig's Castle and the Planet Hollywood - which seems to get closed by a fake-facade.	Zu sehen hier die Lücke zwischen dem Restaurant und dem Planet Hollywood - die scheinbar durch eine Fassade geschlossen wird.	A look at the building's top reveals new themeing elements being added including winged lions / gargoyls in the corners.	Ein Blick zum Dach des Gebäudes zeigt neue Themeing-Elemente einschließlich geflügelter Löwen in den Ecken.


Another look into the gap toward Planet Hollywood. It seems as if in the background a small tower is under construction.	Ein weiterer Blick in die Lücke zum Planet Hollywood hin. Es scheint als sei im Hintergrund ein Turm im Bau.	In the meantime the lower part of a fake turret has been added to the front corner of the building.	In der Zwischenzeit wurde ein falscher Erker an der vorderen Ecke des Gebäudes angesetzt.


Since April the 14th the McDonald's Restaurant has been closed for an expansion and a construction fence has closed off the former outdoor seating area. In the recent weeks a temporary tent has been errected in front of it to house some sales point for food and drinks from the Village.	Seit dem 14. April ist der McDonald's wegen einer Erweiterung geschlossen und der ehemalige Außensitzbereich durch einen Bauzaun gesperrt. Vor diesem wurde nun für die letzten Wochen ein Zelt mit temporären Verkaufsständen des Village für Getränke und Speisen errichtet.


The tent also remained when the construction fence came down as the McDonald's wont reopen till the 19th. As this picture shows most of the work was the addition of this scaffolding for a new roof over the outdoor seating.	Das Zelt blieb auch am Ort, als der Bauzaun entfernt wurde, öffnet der McDonald's doch erst am 19. wieder. Wie dieses Photo zeigt war ein großer Teil der Arbeiten der Bau dieser Konstruktion für ein Dach über den Außensitzplätzen.


The scaffolding around the expansion of the building is gone already but note that there is either a wall behind the windows or a temporary "stand in" for the glass. Interestingly the original building to the left of the expansion still has no new cover / themeing for its facade.	Das Gerüst wurde bereits abgebaut rund um den Neubau, auch wenn die Fenster zum Inneren scheinbar noch(??) durch eine Wand getrennt sind. Interessant auch, dass die Fassade des ursprünglichen Gebäudes links neben der Erweiterung noch eine unverkleidete Fassade hat.


The fakte turret is still missing its top and the facade toward the Planet Hollywood is not yet finished either.	Dem falschen Erker fehlt noch seine Spitze und auch die Fassade zum Planet Hollywood ist noch ein Gerüst.	What is this Cowboy thinking of his new neighbor? Also note that the tower to the right is still in an early phase.	Was denkt wohl der Cowboy über den neuen Nachbarn? Der Trum rechts ist übrigens noch im Rohbau.


On schedule the McDonald's opened on the 19th - even so only the right outdoor seating has been opened so far and the roof on top of both added structures is still missing.	Genau im Zeitplan am 19. hat McDonald's wieder eröffnet - auch wenn nur der rechte Außenbereich bisher geöffnet ist und noch die neuen Dächer fehlen.


Major progress to report during the last week: The doors have been installed on the ground floor, the turret got its top and parts of the construction fence have come down to allow the transport of equipment!!		Große Fortschritte während der letzten Woche: im Erdgeschoss wurden die Türen eingebaut, der falsche Erker hat seine Spitze bekommen und zum An- und Abtransport wurde ein Teil des Bauzaunes entfernt!!

Between the King Ludwig's Castle and Billy Bob's a new statue of King Ludwig on horseback has appeared.	Zwischen King Ludwig's Castle und Billy Bob's ist eine neue Statue von König Ludwig zu Pferde aufgetaucht.	But as the cosntruction fence is stil up only its upper part can be seen - including a colorful shield.	Doch wegen des Bauzaunes ist nur die obere Hälfte zu sehen - samt farbigem Schild.


With the construction fence and nearly all scaffolding completely gone one has to wonder what happened to the artfull decorations that adorned the facade in the original concept drawings as seen further up on this page?		Nachdem nun Bauzaun und Gerüste fast komplett verschwunden sind, muss man sich fragen: was ist eigentlich aus den kunstvollen Dekorationen der Fassade geworden, die auf den Konzeptzeichnungen zu sehen waren (siehe oben)??

Looks really German - doesn't it? Finally the facade of the original building behind the statue got a new covering too, also note how the top of the tower peaks over the roof.	Typisch Deutsch - oder? Mittlerweile wurde auch die Fassade des alten Gebäudes hinter der Statue neu gestaltet, und über das Dach lugt der Turm neben Planet Hollywood.	Now the statue can be seen completely - even so the base still needs some major work. But why is each of the horse's legs, even the lifted on, stnading on a pole??	Nun ist die Statue komplett zu sehen - allerdings muss ihr Sockel noch bearbeitet werden. Aber warum eigentlich ruhen alle vier Beine des Pferdes auf Stützen?

Already details are being added to the facade - as this laterns found next to the doors.	Nun werden bereits Details wie diese Laternen neben den Eingängen an der Fassade angebracht.	And the tower next to Planet Hollywood looks really impressive with its detailed top.	Und der Turm neben Planet Hollywood mit seiner detaillierten Spitze beeindruckt bereits.
