To All Who Come to this Happy Place...

Disney had not spared any efforts to make this opening special a huge success. Many still remembered the disaster that Disneyland's opening show was in 1955. This broadcast was plagued by countless mistakes as well as a theme park, that had to struggle with way more attendance than anticipated.
But the Grand Opening Special of Euro Disneyland was supposed to be perfect. Don Mischer got the job to produce the show together with Disney's very own Buena Vista Productions. Some of Europe's biggest television channels did broadcast the Opening Special, among them TF-1 in France, RAI in Italy and ARD in Germany, which all send their most popular faces to host the event. In the United States, the CBS network delivered the first images of the latest Magic Kingdom to the Americans.
A few days before the event, the first guests (among them journalists, local politicians and the employees of the sponsoring companies) scouted Euro Disneyland and its surroundings - which offered a great opportunity to film a few first impressions for television. On April 10, the Disneyland Hotel was officially opened (as well were the remaining five hotels at the resort) with a great ceremony that featured an impressive number of actors, dancers, Disney cartoon characters, the Euro Disney Grand Opening Marching Band (which consisted of 650 members!), countless cheerleaders as well as a daytime fireworks display.

Und Disney hatte weder Kosten noch Mühen gescheut, um aus dieser Gala einen rauschenden Erfolg zu machen. Viele erinnerten sich noch an die katastrophale Eröffnungssendung zu Disneyland 1955. Diese Show war von zahllosen Pannen und einem Themenpark geplagt gewesen, der mit weit höheren Besucherzahlen als erwartet zu kämpfen hatte.
Aber die Eröffnungsgala von Euro Disney sollte perfekt werden. Don Mischer sollte die Sendung zusammen mit Disneys Buena Vista Productions produzieren. Ein paar von Europas größten Fernsehsendern übertrugen die Gala, darunter TF-1 in Frankreich, RAI in Italien und die ARD in Deutschland, die alle auch ihre beliebtesten Moderatoren schickten. In den USA lieferte das Network CBS die ersten Bilder des neuesten Magic Kingdoms in amerikanische Haushalte.
Ein paar Tage vor diesem Ereignis durchstreiften bereits die ersten Gäste (hauptsächlich Journalisten, Lokalpolitiker und Angestellte der Sponsoren) Euro Disneyland und dessen Umgebung - was dem Fernsehen eine tolle Chance bot, erste Impressionen zu filmen. Am 10. April wurde dann das Disneyland Hotel (neben den anderen fünf Hotels im Resort) in einer großen Zeremonie eröffnet, welche eine beeindruckende Zahl an Darstellern, Tänzern, Disney Cartoonfiguren, die Euro Disney Grand Opening Marching Band (die aus 650 Musikern bestand!), zahllose Cheerleader sowie Feuerwerk beinhaltete.

The Big Night

People, who turned on their tv on April 11, 1992, could witness a flight towards Europe, over the Eiffel Tower to Euro Disneyland. They were welcome by Mickey greeting them on French, Minnie on Italian, Goofy on English, Jiminy Cricket on German and Donald Duck on Spanish (which already made clear that the emphasise of this show would also be on the European roots that Disney and its characters had).
Disney had invited an illustrious group of celebrities to walk down the red carpet in front of the Disneyland Hotel, to take part in a confetti parade on Main Street, U.S.A. or just to have a good time at Euro Disney (in front of the cameras, of course): Bob Hoskins, Jean Claude Van Damme, Jane Seymour, Michael J. Fox, Peter Gabriel, Eddie Murphy, Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson (who hosted the American version of this television show), Rosanna Arquette, Gina Lollobridgida, George Lucas and many, many others. You could also see actress Candace Bergen pressing their hands into wet cement, which was labelled "Disney-MGM Studios Europe" (the second theme park in Paris was supposed to open in 1995 back then).

Finally, the first official act of this evening, which experienced lovely weather for this time of the year, took place:
In front of a dark Le Château de la Belle au Bois Dormant, Euro Disney ambassador Sabine Marquand introduced the chairman of the Walt Disney Company, Monsieur Michael Eisner. And like Walt Disney 37 years earlier, Eisner stood there, talking to the world: "The founder of our company once said 'What I want more than anything else is for Disneyland to be a place where grown-ups and children can experience together the wonders of life, of adventure, and come out and feeling the better for.' Well, Walt's dream is also our dream for Euro Disney. And so with young voices from all over Europe we dedicate Le Château de la Belle au Bois Dormant to both the young and the young at heart, to those who believe, that when you wish upon a star your dreams do come true." And with Michael's last word, a children's choirs, standing behind him, began to sing Disney's classical "When You Wish Upon a Star" in French, English and German and with the last few tunes, the fairy tale castle was light up and star-shaped fireworks exploded above Euro Disney.

Unveiling the Curtains

The Grand Opening Special also featured great little, pre-taped movies, that "opened" the different lands:

First up was Frontierland. The cavalry was riding on their horses into Fort Comstock, followed by Goofy who lead the first guests into the world of cowboys and Indians. Those movies were indeed clever teasers for their specific lands. It offered a view onto the Lucky Nugget Revue (with its lovely dancers), Cowboys, who were fighting on Thunder Mesa's roofs, a short tour of Phantom Manor as well as a trip aboard the Riverboats, on which the girls from the Lucky Nugget Saloon did win quiet a something at a game of poker: Big Thunder Mountain.
This first impression of the park's lands ended with a big "Hooray!" and Cowboy hats being thrown up into the cloudy spring sky.

Fantasyland was opened in a real magical way: all of the fairy tale characters were asleep on the Château's courtyard. Then, the prince came, kissed Sleeping Beauty and Fantasyland awoke with flourish of trumpets and white doves flying above the land of Disney's fairy tales. Peter Pan invited to a ride on Peter Pan's Flight, Alice got lost in her Curious Labyrinth, Dopey discovered the Dragon sleeping under the castle, guests were enjoying Dumbo the Flying Elephant and the Carousel, a child pulled out the Sword in the Stone and the Seven Dwarfs lead towards It's a Small World.

Captain Hook and his crew of pirates were the first ones to walk through the gates of the bazar into Adventureland, followed by those guests, who wanted to take a look at the attractions that could be found there.
The first look onto this part of Euro Disneyland was folded into a little story how Peter Pan played a prank on Hook: at the courtyard of Adventureland Bazar, the Captain finds a map to a hidden treasure. We now followed the pirates on a wild search through Adventureland, over Adventure Isle and through the Pirates of the Caribbean, until Hook finds the marked spot and gets caught in a mousetrap.
At the end of this very first impression of Adventureland Captain Hook, Smee, the pirates and Peter Pan were assembled aboard Captain Hook's galley and were waving to those who watched this television spectacular at home.

The last one of the theme park's areas to be dedicated was Discoveryland. Jules Verne (played by French actor Michel Vallette) hosted this tour of a future, that never was. He was the one, who gave command to turn on the lights of Discoveryland and let it sparkle in all its beauty. Verne, talking in French, emphasised Discoveryland's idea as a place of dreams, hopes and visions that men is able to imagine.
Images of L'Orbitron and Autopia were shown (Space Mountain wouldn't open for another three years), and finally Verne took its "guests" in front of the tv up into space: Star Tours. After a brief glimpse of this attraction (that was expected to be one of the big hits at the new park), a visibly impressed Verne steps out of one of the StarSpeeders and exclaims, that many state that he was already able to see this future a hundred years ago. But he agrees that there is one thing, that he couldn't have foreseen: Michael Jackson. And so people from all over Europe could see a short clip from Captain Eo, in which the then immensely popular singer was featured prominently.

Those short introductions to the different lands of Euro Disneyland were not only clever advertisement for the whole enterprise, but also wonderful and magical first glimpses onto the different worlds that Mickey Mouse offered here…

Zu erst kam Frontierland. Die Kavalarie zog auf dem Rücken ihrer Pferde in das Fort Comstock ein, gefolgt von Goofy, der die ersten Gäste in die Welt der Cowboys und Indianer führte.
Und diese Filme waren in der Tat ein cleverer Vorgeschmack für ihre jeweiligen Länder. Hier wurde ein Blick auf die Lucky Nugget Revue (mit deren umwerfenden Tänzerinnen) ermöglicht. Man sah Cowboys, wie sie sich auf den Dächern von Thunder Mesa einen wilden Kampf lieferten. Man besuchte kurz das Phantom Manor und die Riverboats, auf denen die Mädchen aus dem Lucky Nugget Saloon etwas ganz besonderes beim Pokern gewannen: Big Thuner Mountain.
Dieser erste Einblick auf ein Land dieses Parks endete mit einem großen "Hooray!" und Cowboyhütten, die in den bewölkten Frühlingshimmel geworfen wurden.

Fantasyland wurde auf eine wirklich zauberhafte Art und Weise eröffnet: alle Märchenfiguren schliefen im Hof des Châteaus. Dann kam der Prinz und küsste Dornröschen wach, worauf ganz Fantasyland mit Fanfarenbläsern erwachte und weiße Tauben über das Land von Disneys Märchen flogen. Peter Pan lud darauf zu einer Fahrt mit Peter Pan's Flight ein, Alice verirrte sich in ihrem Curious Labyrinth, Seppl endteckte den schlafenden Drachen unter dem Schloss, die ersten Gäste amüsierten sich auf Dumbo the Flying Elephant sowie dem Karussel, ein Kind zog das Schwert aus dem Stein heraus und die sieben Zwerge führten die Besucher hinüber zu It's a Small World.

Captain Hook und seine Piratencrew waren die ersten, die durch die Tore des Basars in Adventureland einzogen, gefolgt von den Besuchern, die einen Blick auf die hier zu findenden Attraktionen werfen wollten.
Dieser erste Blick auf diesen Teil von Euro Disneyland war in eine kleine Geschichte verpackt, wie Peter Pan Hook einen Streich spielte: auf dem Marktplatz des Adventureland Bazars findet der Captain eine Karte zu einem versteckten Schatz. Der Zuschauer folgte nun den Piraten auf ihrer wilden Suche durch Adventureland, über die Adventure Isle und durch die Pirates of the Caribbean bis Hook den markierten Platz findet und in eine Mausefalle tappt.

Am Ende dieses ersten Eindrucks von Adventureland standen Captain Hook, Smee, die Piraten und Peter Pan zusammen auf Captain Hook's Galley und winkten denen zu, die diese Fernsehspektakel von zu Hause aus ansahen.

Der letzte Bereich des Themenparks, der eingeweiht wurde, war Discoveryland. Jules Verne (gespielt vom französischen Schauspieler Michel Vallette) war der Gastgeber dieser Tour durch eine Zukunft, die niemals war. Er war derjenige, der das Kommando gab die Lichter in Discoveryland anzumachen und es so in all seiner Schönheit erstrahlen zu lassen. Verne, der in seiner Muttersprache Französisch sprach, betonte die Idee von Discoveryland als ein Ort der Träume, Hoffnungen und Visionen, die sich die Menschen vorstellen können.
Bilder des Orbitrons und von Autopia wurden gezeigt (Space Mountain sollte erst drei Jahre später eröffnen) und schließlich nahm Verne seine "Gäste" mit auf eine Reise in's All: Star Tours. Nach einem kurzem Ausschnitt aus dieser Attraktion (die einer der großen Hits des Parks werden sollte), stieg ein sichtlich beeindruckter Verne aus einem der StarSpeeders aus und erklärte, dass viele denken, er hätte schon vor 100 Jahren die Zukunft sehen können. Doch müsse er einräumen, dass er eine Sache nicht hat vorhersehen können: Michael Jackson. Und so konnten Menschen in ganz Europa einen kleinen Clip aus Captain Eo sehen, in dem der damals enorm beliebte Sänger die Hauptrolle spielte.

Diese kurzen Einführungen in die verschiedenen Länder von Euro Disneyland waren nicht nur clevere Werbung für das ganze Unternehmen sonder auch wundervolle und magische erste Eindrücke auf die verschiedenen Länder, welche die Maus hier anbot...
