 1995 saw the grand opening of "Space Mountain - de la Terra a la Lune" / "Space Mountain - from the Earth to the Moon" in construction since late 1992. At the heart of Discoveryland guests could experience an adventure based on the dreams and visions of legendary author Jules Verne. Space Mountain was inspired by Verne’s classic book "From The Earth To The Moon" in which he describes how brave explorers are set inside a rocket that is blasted from a cannon, into space on their quest to reach the moon. Upon its opening in 1995 the multi-million dollar attraction instantly became the showpiece of the park, unparalleled by any Disney coaster ever built for speed and thrill.

Guests began their adventure into space by walking along an open sided tunnel, which passed through the centre of the action. From here they could watch as rocket ships carrying riders completely surrounded them, dodging meteorites and flying through giant props. Everything was carefully themed to remind the guests of the future as envisioned by Jules Verne.

The tension built further as guests boarded their unique rocket cars in which each seat was equipped with its own surround sound stereo system. This played a majestic, orchestral, specially written musical score by Steve Bramson which was synchronised with the action of the ride to further enhance the experience. A feature never before realized at any roller coaster worldwide!

Next the cars were "loaded" into the "Columbiad Cannon" of the Baltimore Gun Club positioned on the side of the mountain. After a brief stop at the bottom, they were moved half way up the canon - here guest’s anticipation grew further before, with an explosive boom and plumes of smoke they were launched out of the cannon into the mountain - and thus into space.

During the next 2 minutes guests experienced a high speed roller coaster in semi darkness which included 3 inversions, a loop, barrel roll and tongue loop (aka horseshoe). Those who kept their eyes open also saw the numerous special effects throughout the attraction including the sensation of blasting through the centre of a meteorite, as the rocket-train searched it ways to star fields, scratched along the surface of a comet, passed by space-miners, flew through turbulences and finally toward the smiling moon - but shortly before they would reach the destination of their journey the rocket slowed down, hang shortly in the air and then an ever faster and faster fall back to earth began ... where the cars passed through the Electro de Velocirator which slowed them as they re-entered the loading station. All this was underscored by a symphonic score, as usually only created for blockbuster sci-fi-movies which added a unique building block to the ride experience.

Basically with the day of its opening Space Mountain became one of the parks most popular and famous attractions and stayed in this position till its "closure" on January 16th, 2005 - and is again since its reopening on April 9th, 2005 after an extensive rehab with a new story and new effects but the same track as Space Mountain: Mission 2. But back to the original version which some even consider the parks saviour, transforming its fortunes from possible closure to success.

Earlier versions of this ride in Disney’s other Magic Kingdoms could not be more different than the "Paris' Original", which introduced multiple inversions for the first time on any Disney roller coaster (the first inversion ever on a Disney coaster was introduced in Paris too by the way - on Indiana Jones!). But that was not the only first - the coaster also pioneered the angled launch system as well as the unique on-board music system, the technology from which has now been incorporated into the Space Mountains in Walt Disney World, Florida and Disneyland, California. But even with this new feature none of them was able to recreate the thrill and excitement of the journey through space with it's dangers and unexpected beautifull views through starfields that Disneyland Paris offered.Above all the creation of Space Mountain Paris introduced the possibility for a whole new breed of Disney attraction. For the first time the Disney Imagineers were seen to have created a roller coaster aimed at a thrill seeking audience, a departure from the typical family oriented attractions the Imagineers are famous for.

Im Herzen von Discoveryland konten Gäste ein Abenteuer basierend auf den Träumen und Visionen des legendären Autors Jules Verne erleben. Space Mountain wurde durch Vernes Klassiker "Von der Erde zum Mond" inspiriert, in dem er schildert, wie sich eine Gruppe mutiger Forscher in einem Projektil mittels einer gigantischen Kanone in das Weltall schießen lässt, um zum Mond zu gelangen. Unmittelbar nach ihrer Eröffnung 1995 wurde die Attraktion das Aushängeschild des Parks, war sie doch was Geschwindigkeit und Thrill angeht einmalig in allen Disney Themenparks.

Das Abenteuer begann bereits, wenn die Gäste den dunklen Tunnel betraten, der sich durch das Herz des Berges erstreckte und einen Blick in das Weltall gewährte. Von hier liesen sich die Züge beobachten, wie sie mit ihren Passagieren durch den Weltraum rasten, in letzter Sekunde Meteoriten auswichen und in neue Welten vorstießen - alles gestaltet als sei es direkt Skizzen Jules Vernes entsprungen.

Die Spannung steigerte sich weiter, wenn die Gäste die Züge bestiegen, die für jeden Platz mit einem eigenen Surround Sound System ausgestattet waren, über das ein speziell komponierter, majestätischer Orchester-Soundtrack synchron zum Geschehen gespielt wurde, um das Erlebnis nochmals zu steigern. Ein weltweit noch nie bei einer Achterbahn angewandter Trick!

Die Wagen wurde in die gigantische Kanone "Columbiad" des Baltimore Gun Club geladen, die an der Seite des Berges in den Himmel ragt. Nach einem kurzen Stop am unteren Ende, wurden die Züge fast die bis zur Hälfte der Kanone nach oben gezogen - hier steigerte sich die Spannung in das schier Unendliche... doch dann, mit einer ohrenbetäubenden Explosion und einem Schwall Rauch wurde der Zug in den Berg hinein geschossen - in den Weltraum.

Während der nächsten 2 Minuten erwartete die Passagiere eine Hochgeschwindigkeitsachterbahn in der Dunkelheit des Alls, einschließlich dreier Inversionen (einem Looping, Barrel Roll und Tongue Loop, auch bekannt als Horseshoe). Alle die es wagten, ihre Augen zu öffnen, wurden mit zahlreichen Spezialeffekten belohnt, so einem sensationellen Flug durch einen Meteoriten. Doch schon suchte der Zug wieder seinen Weg durch Sternenfelder, schrammte an einem Kometen entlang, vorbei an Mienenarbeitern auf Kometen, durch Turbulenzen und schließlich zum lachenden Mond - kurz bevor dieser erreicht worden wäre, wurde der Zug immer langsamer, hing kurz im All, bevor er schneller und schneller zurück zur Erde fiel ... wo die Wagen durch den Electro de Velocirator abgebremst wurden, bevor sie in die Ladestation zurückkehrten. All dies wurde von einem bombastischen Soundtrack untermalt, wie er sonst nur aufwendigen Science-Fiction-Filmen zu Gute kommt und der mit seinen symphonischen Elementen einen einmaligen Beitrag zu dem Erlebnis lieferte.

Von dem Tag seiner Eröffnung an bis zu seiner "Schließung" am 16. Januar 2005 war Space Mountain eine der populärsten und berühmtesten Attraktionen des Parks - und ist es erneut seit der Wiedereröffnung am 9. April 2005 nach einer Generalüberholung mit neuer Story und neuen Effekten, aber der selben Strecke unter der Bezeichnung Space Mountain: Mission 2. Aber wieder ´zurück zu dem Original, das tatsächlich von einigen gar als der Retter des Parks, der den finanziellen Erfolg brachte, angesehen wird.

Frühere Versionen der Bahn in den anderen Magic Kingdoms Disneys, unterscheiden sich deutlich von dem "Pariser Original", das nicht nur erstmals bei einer Disney Achterbahn drei Inversionen aufbot (übrigens auch die erste Disney-Achterbahn mit einer Inversion findet sich in Paris - Indiana Jones!) und das "Raketen"-Startsysteme zur Premiere brachte, sondern auch die einmalige Technologie des Music-Systems in den Wagen einführte, das seitdem in Walt Disney World, Florida, und im Disneyland, Kalifornien, nachgerüstet wurde. Doch auch mit diesem Bonus konnten die dortigen Space Mountain nicht die Spannung und das Erlebnis kopieren, das in Paris mit seiner abenteuerlichen Streckenführungen und wundervollen Szenarien inmitten Sternenfelder erschaffen wurde. Mit dem Space Mountain in Paris wurde der Vorreiter einer neuen Attraktions-Generation für Disney geschaffen. So entwickelten die Imagineers von Disney hier erstmals eine Achterbahn, die sich an ein Thrill suchendes Publikum an stelle der Familien richtet, für die Disney bisher erfolgreich arbeitete.

 An integral part of the experience was the symphonic soundtrack of the ride played in synch with the real action. The composition of Steve Bramson, created especially for Disneyland Paris, was a unique work in the tradition of the Star Wars soundtracks that dominate the world of movie soundtrack for Science Fiction themes. The rising score, recorded with a large symphonic orchestra, has been released by Disneyland Paris on the CD "Une Journee a Disneyland Paris", but unfortunately not in the original version heared during the ride but in a toned down version used in the queuing area.

The way more energetic and thrilling original version can be found at the Sound of Magic-website. The composer Steve Bramson, who is also responsible for scoring numerous tv-shows and movies, has released some recordings of his work for Space Mountain on his website. For this he has chosen material recorded with the full orchestra and used in the waiting area / the station but not yet officially released. All those who got addicted to the music played in the area around Space Mountain, which fitted perfectly to the style of the ride's soundtrack and the expectations of an epic adventure in space, should check out the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack of "The Rocketeer" by James Horner, from which several tracks were used here. As the original Parisian Space Mountain closed on January 16, 2005, for once DLP.info will reveal some of the secrets by turning on the light inside the mountain - for a few selected photos - and get into some details about the launch system. It is similar to the catapult systems used on aircraft carriers and is based on a high-speed wench system with a 36 mm wide steel-cable, which pulls a 2.5 ton heavy "catapult-car" that runs on a special track below the actual coaster-track. Once the train has moved into launch position inside the canon, the catapult-car moves below the train and hooks up with the fourth car of the coaster track. Five independent security checks at this point make sure that the system is ready to go and once the main control has verified that no other train blocks the track sector ahead the catapult-car "catapults" / shoots the train off.

Fun Fact: Would You have known ... the meteor the train is racing right through was called "MOM", which is the abbrevation for "Mother of all Meterites"? Ever wondered why the coasters runs so silent? Usually the track and the supports function as resonate room for the sound created by trains. To avoid this sound which might overpower the music played on board the track and support was filled with sand.

Nachdem das "Pariser Original" des Space Mountain am 16. Januar 2005 schloss enthüllt DLP.info ausnahmsweise einige der Geheimnisse und schaltet das Licht im Inneren des Mountains an - für einige ausgewählte Photos und einen genaueren Blick auf das Abschuss-System. Es ähnelt dem Katapult-System, wie es auf Flugzeugträgern eingesetzt wird und basiert auf einem 2,5 Tonnen schweren "Katapult-Wagen", der gezogen von einem Metallkabel mit 36 mm Durchmesser auf einer speziellen Schiene unterhalb der eigentlichen Bahnschiene fährt. Befindet sich der Zug in der Abschussposition, fährt der Katapult-Wagen unter den Zug und hakt sich am Boden des vierten Wagens ein. Nach fünf unabhängigen Sicherheitschecks und der Freigabe des Streckenabschnitts nach der Kanone, schleudert der Katapult Wagen den Zug ins All.

Fun-Fact: Hätten Sie gewusst ... der Meteor, durch den der Zug schießt, hieß "MOM" - was wiederum für "Mother of all Meteorites" ("Mutter aller Meteoriten") steht. Schon einmal gefragt, wieso die Bahn so leise ist? Normalerweise wirken Schienen und tragende Säulen als Resonanzraum. Um das zu verhindern, wurden Schienen und Säulen hier mit Sand gefüllt.

 Children under the age of 8 or smaller than 1.40 m as well as expectant mothers were not allowed to ride. In the later years the minimum height was reduced to 1.32 m.

Visitors with back/neck-problems or heart/motion sickness were discouraged from riding, too.

 Die Fahrt war nicht zugelassen für Kinder unter 8 Jahren oder mit einer Körpergröße unter 1,40 m sowie für Schwangere. In den späteren Jahren wurde die Mindestgröße allerdings auf 1,32 m reduziert.

Außerdem wurde Personen mit Rückenproblemen, Kreislauf / Herzerkrankungen oder Bluthochdruck von einer Fahrt abgeraten.
