 Could you imagine San Francisco without its cable cars? Ever since August 1st, 1873 - when the first cable car line was inaugurated - the small cars have travelled up and down the hills of San Francisco.

The cable car was constructed to replace horse-drawn carriages, for which the city's hills were much to steep (resulting in several severe accidents).

Within just thirty years, the cable car's tracks increased to more than 160 kilometres throughout the whole city. But the terrible San Francisco earthquake of 1906 as well as the development of the automobile put an end to the golden age of the cable cars.

But luckily, that wasn't the death for them. In 1964, the cable cars were declared to be a monumet - and even today, they are the way of public transportation, which is still operating, with that honor worlwide. Nowadays, there are still three lines being operated with more than 17 kilometres of track.
