 Visionaries of the past may have envisioned "Horse-less carriages" driven by machines which could move at great speed, they may have even imagined a future where a network of high speed roads would cross the country making long journeys effortless and fast. (But did they ever envision the traffic jams, delays and breakdowns that we now all know come as part of the package?)

At Autopia guests get a chance to experience how those dreamers of the past may have imagined it could be, here guests take control of small petrol powered cars which they drive around a circuit of roads, tunnels and bridges
that pass around an area at the edge of Discoveryland.

For many children, it's a dream come true to take control of the steering wheel press the accelerator and drive - here they get the chance. A metal rail which runs along the middle of the lanes stops the cars from veering of course. But the steering wheel does allow for control for at least a foot or two either side; what some parents might regret as soon as their offsprings learned how to rattle the car.

During the trip along the motorways of the future, decorative advertising boards offer a historic view of the world of yesterday's tomorrow.

Autopia is great fun for children - although it's not unusual to see big kids to revving up the engine along the tracks.

 Die Visionäre der Vergangenheit haben sich wohl auch "pferdelose Wagen" vorgestellt, die in der Zukunft mit großen Geschwindigkeiten über ein Netzwerk aus Fernstraßen quer durch's Land rasen würden. (Ob sie jedoch auch an die zermürbenden Verkehrsstaus dachten, die dazugehören, darf bezweifelt werden.)

Bei Autopia bekommen die Besucher die Möglichkeit die Träume dieser Visionäre zu erleben indem sie in mit kleinen Diesel-betriebenen Autochens über einen Parcours aus Straßen, Tunnels und Brücken am Rande von Discoveryland fahren.

Für viele Kinder ist es wohl ein wahr gewordener Traum einmal das Lenkrad in die Hand zu nehmen, auf das Gaspedal zu drücken und selber zu fahren - hier bekommen sie diese Chance. Eine Metallschiene verläuft in der Mitte der Fahrbahn und hindert die Autos daran vom Kurs abzuweichen. Doch das Lenkrad erlaubt auch ein wenig Bewegungsspielraum, was einige Eltern spätestens dann bedauern wenn ihr Sprößling herausgefunden hat wie man den Wagen richtig durchschütteln kann.

Während der Fahrt auf den Autobahnen der Zukunft bieteten dekorative Werbeschilder einen historischen Blick auf die Welt eines Morgens, wie man es sich einst vorgestellt hat.

Autopia macht vor allem Kindern viel Spaß - obwohl es nicht ungewöhnlich ist auch "große Kinder" zu sehen wie sie die Autos steuern.

 A fixed vehicle close to the entrance of the rides offers a great photo opportunity, in which you can sit in the car while your picture is being taken by your friends or family.

 Ein abgestellter Wagen nahe dem Eingang zur Attraktion bietet eine tolle Foto-Möglichkeit, bei der Sie im Auto sitzen während ihre Freunde oder Verwandete ein Bild von Ihnen gemacht wird.

Seen from the walkways located above the track the cars of Autopia look like models - so fittingly Mattel sponsored the attraction as of 1992, but when it terminated its contract in 2000 all signs of this were taken down and the attraction remained without sponsor till 2002 when Esso jumped in - which is just as fitting, as those cars run on real gasoline...

Von den erhöhten Fußwegen aus gesehen, wirken die Wagen von Autopia wie Modelle - ganz dazu passend trat seit 1992 Mattel als Sponsor auf, doch nach Beendigung des entsprechenden Vertrages 2000 wurden alle entsprechenden Hinweise entfernt und die Attraktion blieb ohne Sponsor, bis 2002 Esso diese Position übernahm - was genau so gut passt, fahren die Wagen doch alle mit Benzin...
